FAO BenR & Experts: HELP ME!

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Ok, my FRST was running fine when it seemed to mis-fire so it juddered while travelling at low revs then it gradually got worse & 3 minutes later the revs r moving up and down from 600 to 2k rpm when stationary.

Swaped my ignition leads (correctly BTW), put the electrics on by turning the key 2 notchs; then i can hear rapid ticking sound like my injectors & coming from that area. It will turn over but not start when attempting turn the engine on.

A knakered idle control valve shouldnt stop u starting the car by pressing the gas should it?

Need HELP. Towing it to a garage tomorrow... Help much appricated.

No idea what that could be mate. They are not a great engine.

It could be somethin silly like an imobiliser maybe?

ok, so whats actually the broke part on it.

You check for fuel supply, spark, the ICV (not so familiar with the turbos) on the aspirated engines are a bit ballsy and lots of people have probs with them.

Find the simple source of the problem first...then backtrack.

It is but its been in the garage for a year & the guy i bought it off works for Volvo and re-built the top end.

Must be some sensor or wiring problem or something... ... ...

Ive done around 250 miles in it with no other trouble apart from having to fit a new alternator.

They are not a great engine

Please inform me of why this is? The CVH is a very good engine, ok it has its flaws like oil gallery machining, offset cam lobes and heavy valve gear but I would say its a rather good engine. Its just the gear thats strapped onto it is a bit dodgy at times.

The FRST will be running the EEC1V management (not the good old KE Jetronic of the ERSTs).

Righty floor the throttle this will cut of the injectors as it assumes the car is flooded so if it starts back off the throttle and it may start running just fine. Do that then get back to me with an update.

like he said, its good.........not great. ;)

Personally not an engine i would put in my car. rather have a kent :D

true..............BUT KENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehehe

sorry, im one of those Crossflow nuts......still love em, and wouldnt touch a pinto they are horrid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

saying that, they dont get much more out of the CVH then the crossle when each has been done right to the hilt.

well this is so far below the belt your toes are gonna feel it - turbo!

The X-flow makes the power but thats with steel bottom end revving to 10 grand, the CVH doesnt need to rev as high AND the cvh has a much better smoke screen when the valve stem oil seals go.

Also push rods! Eurgh!

The aint that great. I know a lot of people who have had fiesta turbos and Escort turbos. Nothing but trouble when they get to like 10 years old.

The series 1 escort turbo is meant to be a lot better than the later ones. Ford cut costs and made the engine a bit of a cheapie. Not as strong.

Might mock push rod engines but look at a 5 turbo. They are an ancient design really. Can still get the power out of em! Even if they do go wrong like every 5 minutes hehe.

Well Paul I have what some would class as perversly excessive knowledge of CVH engines and they are a good engine.

Ford never cut costs etc. See the 4 pot Zetec engines? They are based on, wait for it the CVH. You may have heard of the ZVH? Thats a zetec bottom end with a cvh head. The zetec has a fully counterbalanced bottom end and also comes in 2 litre capacity the CVH doesnt.

The S1 is not really any better than the S2, some of the early S1s had the gear type oil pump and the later post jan 86 engines had the rotor and vane pump. Then you have the heads, you have the leanburn and the proper semi hemi heads. Thats the only diff.

Pushrods, I was merely trying to get at Ben. But like Duckworth once said "push rods to activate valves is like lying on your back and playing the piano with your toes..." that sums it up well.

My 2 FRSTs had only minor things like track rod ends - never had an engine prob and one was running 15psi (double std). Both were bought as standard one woman owner cars tho - Mine was done by AVA in Glasgow who seem to know what they were doing. Buying a modded car is a lottery unfortunatly.

Ok mate if you think they are good thats your opinion. Id just never have one myself. Think they are sh*te rattly things that go through valve stem oil seals like mad lol.

Never wanted one and will never have one.

Yeah the zetec is based on the CVH. They got rid of the head though, which is the biggest problem hehe.

Im sure if you look after em they can be a decent engine but most of em arent really as they are all old.

Chris any other thoughts as the car wont even start! The starter motor will turn over but no life in the engine.

Just the ticking with the electrics on.

No CVH had steel rods as standard.

Well if its not even trying to start with prolonged crankingwith the throttle fully open then thats just annoying, means I have to type a bit.

Is it running coil packs or the Bosch dizzy? Although its probably to early for the coil packs, the very last ones had them.

1st off pop an HT lead off and stick an old plug in it, rest it on the cam cover and crank the engine. You should get a successsion of bright blue sparks. If you dont then theres an ignition problem. If it has coil packs test each pack.

If you have the dizzy system and theres no spark time to get the multi meter out. I can give you firgures if you need them.

It may also be the module/amplifier itself.

Check for a spark 1st and if its there it will more than likely be at the right time so then it can only be fuel.
