Finally! Clio 16v v 106 GTi

Well, Ive been waiting for ages to see what all the fuss is about with these 106 GTi giant-slayers - over a year now in fact, since I got my 16v. Finally, today, I got the chance.

Found a willing yellow one in Bristol today on the way out to Cribbs Causeway and onto the M5. Lofty and Ben R will know the road!

I had that real flies in tummy feeling as the Pug pulled up next to me at the first set of lights. Ive heard a lot about these cars (and the VTS) being a good match for the 16v. But the reality was a bit of a victory for the old Valver.

I took off slowly at the first set of lights to see if he was going for it - and sure enough he did. Once it was clear he was up for it, I bombed it too. Got ahead of the GTi at the start of 2nd, and carried on making headway. At the next set of lights, where I got a proper start, he was with me until about 30mph. 106 GTis dont seem to have very long gears - more like 35ish to a 16vs 40ish.

He was still going for it as we started leaving Bristol. I was impressed with the speed it was carrying through roundabouts - but I have just fitted some Phase 2 wheels to my 16v with sh*tty tyres (until Lofty sorts me out with some fresh ones). However, my 16v was getting right ahead at low speeds and was positively pulverising it once we got onto the M5 sliproad - I mean a good four to five car lengths by 80mph.

We went our separate ways at the next junction and gave each other the obligatory flash and wave.

I know a little bit of this would be down to the extra power my engine is making, but I still think a standard 16v would have had this 106 fairly easily. I would say personally that it would be about as difficult to shake off as a 323i or one of the new Golf TDi 150bhp jobbies (obviously with different power bands).

I guess it could be different come a B-road though!

Yeah I think the little extra your valver has *could* be something to do with it Ben! The 106 GTi runs out of legs once you start to really get going but off the mark Id still say a standard valver would have trouble overhauling one, real trouble. But theyre a nice car to race, handle well, nippy etc. A good match.

one of my mates has one id say theres nuthin in it up till 4th wen the valver starts to pull away but not by much

id driven it before we raced an it feels quicker than my car but its about the same

its a good car handling is good but pedals are far too cramped

Next time you are up in Edinburgh, I will sort out my mates nice yellow 106 GTi for you to race and you will definitely not beat this one!! It has had everything done to it by Peugeot Ecosse and its picture is on one of the forums here. Definitely a very fast pocket rocket!

Girlracer: that was just the feeling I had when I saw this 106 GTi pull up. If a car looks faster than mine or equally as quick, Im usually very careful in my choice to take the bait or not. I really thought I was in for a challenge with the little Pug, what with its reputation and all, so was pleasantly surprised that I saw it off by a fair old margin. Must be the mods!

But Im sure a moded one would be a different proposition.

Renault Clio 16v (std) V Peugeot 106 gti (chipped,zorst-decat,air filter,lowered 50mil) What an afternoon, half a tank of optimax later and engine worn out we have a result, which incedently was all captured on video camera Have gotta say the 106gti had the edge overall. We did 0-60 sprints 0-100 sprints and 100+ power performance. 0-80mph he did have a cars length infront but after about 110mph i was catching him, a few times even had to back off at 120 not to go into the back of him! 0-60/100/100+ results - 1st gear i was infront at 5000rpm, 2nd gear both level until he hit 5000rpm which pushed him infront http://www.cliosport.net/images/OldBBS/2, hit 4th and this is where i made the ground back to both level, hit 5th and slowly pulled infront to about 135mph where i thought it best to slow down! Considering my 16v is standard im very happy with the result and the 106 owner said i would easily have a standard gti and was very impressed with the clios performace and handling. I have this all on tape so will show people at next meet - what a laugh! aaron

correction **0-60/100/100+ results - 1st gear i was infront at 5000rpm, 2nd gear both level until he hit 5000rpm which pushed him infront , slammed into 3rd but made no difference of the cars length gap, hit 4th and this is where i made the ground back to both level, hit 5th and slowly pulled infront to about 135mph where i thought it best to slow down!**

Good work Aaron, its as I thought, motorway speeds the 16v has the power to keep on pulling but the 106 runs out of legs.

DTWD: the engine was rebuilt about 15k ago by a Renault specialist in Winchester who usually does 19 16vs (almost the same engine apart from the inlet manifold). It has re-profiled cams, polished head, vernier pulleys and a chip - as well as ancillaries such as a PBV, induction and exhaust that probably add no power but make it sound nicer! It had an engine dyno before it was slotted back into the car and made 171.3bhp.

Ive raced a few standard 16vs and the real difference only seems to come in once I hit the sweet spot about 4500rpm - when I pull away (but not by as much as I pulled away from the 106 GTi).

Ive just stuck on some original phase 2 wheels - and thats the best "mod" Ive done so far: accelerates and handles better!

Cool thanks Ben. When I get mine, I think I will save up for the 2 litre conversion, or go find someones Williams, take a chainsaw to it, but leave the the engine area fine. Then offer to buy the engine off them. Or just keep an eye out for one. Cant decide will be easier. Probably the chainsaw one, as nobody want to sell there Willy (ooh missus) Or might just not get a 16v and look for a Williams. Probably better in the long, but would mean not getting a new car this year and then it would be 2004 (late) or 2005 before I could get one...I dont think I can live with my RT that long.

The Williams was a special edition of the 16v, much like the Cup is of the 172. But I think that the Willy was a more complete re-make of the original 16v than the Cup is though - it changed the driving characteristics and addressed the 16vs main failing: low down torque. The Cups engine is the same as the 172s - it just loses nearly 10% in weight.

Basically, the Willy got a 2.0 bottom end and a few suspension tweaks. On paper it isnt any quicker than a 16v (both 0-62 in 7.7 etc), but say you were already rolling at slow speed in 2nd, the Willy would pick up much quicker due to more torque at lower revs. In the real world, that means it is quicker.

Only 1200 UK Williams were ever made though. Fortunately for us, the earlier 2.0 Megane Coupe came with almost the same engine as the Willy (they werent just going to make a special enine for the Willy, were they now!) - so a 2.0 conversion can be had for the 16v.

Mines actually still a 1.8, as the bottom end is unchanged.

I wish I could buy a new car at the moment, but saving up the penies. It should be a few months (probably about 4 or 5) but then I am waiting to get my extra years no claims so its actually going to be september time...but I dont think I can wait that long. I may just get the moneny, then pay the extra to drive the Valver early. But because I am 21 with 1 years ncd and 1 accident under my belt (but it wasnt my fault so its not to bad) I cant really get a modded valver yet. Gonna get a standard spec (possibly change the wheels) then after I finish Uni get an induction kit (HP) and an decent exhaust...then when I have the money think about the 2L conversion.

I was lucky yesterday to see an original 16v very close to my car and a Williams 2 in the car park at work yesterday (made a change, usually dont get any more clios in our car park) so after I had finished drooling over them both I came to the conclusion I prefered the 16v to the Williams 2. The rear wiper and lights looked a little worse than the origingal valver. Plus when you think of the extra money your paying for just a little bit more power I dont personally think its woth it. If your buying it for a piece of history then it is...but I cant afford to start thinking like that yet. Power 1st history 2nd.

Is the 2L conversion using the "almost identicle" Megane engine have the same power as the Willy? Or is it slower or just marginal?

The Willy engine and the earlier 2.0 150bhp Megane engine are virtually identical. I dont know exactly what is different, but it is minor. Its called the F7R engine (F7P is the one in the Clio 16v) and also comes in the Spider.
