Finally picked up a 182!

  BG 182
After hassling on here for peoples advice and opinions I've finally got my hands on a 182, I bought it from STRBramley off here on Saturday morning.

It was pretty dusty when I picked it up, so given it some TLC today

Looks great, enjoy it!

I have done so far!

Very nice mate!

Thanks :)

Very nice dude, IMO all you need to do is get fresh number plates, a 197 RS badge and washer blanks. Then would be top class man!

I'm planning on getting some new plates, as the garage that fitted the plates obviously cannot measure and so its currently buckled up on the back. What are the purpose of the washers for the headlights? I know the washers actually still work!

I also need to refurb the headlights, but gotta finishing paying for it before splashing out :(

Thanks Andyy, any particular reason you didn't buy it?

It's got a dephaser rattle and needs front arch liners and the external temp sensor sorting out.

After spending £1K+ on mine in the last 5 months.. I had to say no to it..

Other than that she's tip top!

Great, just comparing notes! yeah I noted everything you've mentioned so glad you said what you did. I'm just getting my head round this whole de-phaser scenario, will it be ok to drive for a while till I've got the cash to get it done, due to the nature of the change, I'll just get the cam/aux belts done too. They were done in 2011, 18k ago.

Yeah it should be mate. The rattle was quite bad though!

It needs a new Auxy belt this year if you go by Renault. So just get all the belts + dephaser done at the same time.. Diamond motors is the nearest specialist to you so i would take it there. Its a bloke on here - i think he is mentioned a couple of comments above.

Apart from that its a good buy!

What did you pay for her if you don't mind me asking? (pm me if you wish to share)

Yeah it will be okay with the dephaser rattle for a few months. How bad is it?

When the time comes go to Mick@Diamond Motors in Long Eaton. He's our local specialist!

Thanks for the tip regarding the local specialist! Its not crazy loud, so should be ok for a while.. I've not got anything to compare it with so not overly maybe Andyy could give us his input?

Any ideas in terms of the costs for this, just so I know what to aim for.

Yeah you will be fine mate :)

I think if you click on his name in the traders section it brings up a price list. But around £600 iirc.

Thanks Mick, thanks for letting us know, worth doing the water pump while its all out? Bit of a shame really, as the belts were done in the middle of 2011, only 18k ago according to the service history.

There's no law that states how long a dephaser pulley will last i'm afraid. One variable that seems to make a huge difference is regular oil and filter changes but I'd personally expect a 100% new dephaser to last a good three to five years with proper regular servicing (Minimum once a year IMO but I always do my cars twice a year).

The water pump isn't essential at the time of timing belt but if you can stand the bill then there's no harm. Shame there's no UK stock of them though at present and I've heard rumors that we won't see any until June but Adam will be in a far better position than me to comment on that subject.

Mick

I'm stuck in financially limbo for the next 2 months.. Which worries me a bit eek, the car is in great condition but the dephaser is a ticking time bomb?

I've seen one explode before but that wasn't anything to do with the pulley itself. Normally they go noisy and stay noisy and just effect power delivery and fuel consumption.

Super, thanks for the information, you've been most helpful. The car is driving lovely and the MPG is increasing (usually cruise control to work on the A50) so just a case of saving up and getting it done when I can afford to. Anything else to think about?

could be it was never replaced when the timing belt was done?

Glad to see you held out for the "right" car but a shame to see that the big belts/dephaser bill is a few years sooner than you may have thought. However looks very clean and very cared for from what I read of the ad! *I don't know nor have any need to know how much you paid so this could have been factored into the cost for all I know*

If STRbramley had the belts done in his ownership I'm sure he could confirm, but there are plenty of cars out ther that have had the dephaser skipped for lack of knowledge/need/wanting to save £150 odd by just having the belt kit done.

IIRC a few of the specialists on here have agreed on several occasions that they have seen plenty of knackered and noisy dephasers but either zero or only one (Dan@SJM?) actual failure ever.

Sorry, very late to the party with that comment! (though the car still looks lovely) Tabbed browsing backfiring on me once again xD

The dephaser was never replaced during my ownership as it had already been done in 2011 (Which is why I bought it). I'm sure the receipt showed that it had also had the dephaser done but then again this could have been bodged.

The receipt says "replace timing belt and auxiliary belt" and parts: "GKT3507XS Belt Kit & GMV61663 Automotive Belt" so not too sure.

Dephaser is not a service part and as such does not need to be changed at belt interval. It's just good practice.

Thanks Gaz, value everyones feedback. It is quite noisy when warm, but understand the timing belt and aux belt were done june '11, 18-19k ago. Reckon' I should hold out till I can afford to get the lot done?
