The Renault 5 GT Turbo Resto

Car  R5 GTT & Arctic 182
Thought I'd make a little thread documenting the progress of my R5 GTT, which I'm working on alongside my Clio 182

Quick run down:
Bought it in 2017 for my 19th bday present to myself, picked it up from a chap called Andy located in the Duxford area.
I knew it needed some TLC with the body work, but had it on the road for about 6 months before stripping it down at the end of 2017 for it to be restored.

I've attached some photo's of it from the day I got it...

It ran okay for the 6 months or so that it was on the road, even though the body work was a bit tatty... it definitely got some great attention!
I managed to find a nicer grille for it too

Here's some pics from the time I had it on the road...

Apart from the grille, I also managed to find a nice set of Renault Clio Williams wheels, which I ran for a few weeks before getting them fully refurbished at Cwmbran Wheel Specialist.

Fair to say that they did an outstanding job! It really made the car look 10x better

After I had the wheels refurbished and buying a nice private reg for it, I had it on the road for a further 2-3 months, before taking it off and stripping it in the garage!

I had full intentions of just getting the shell re-painted... things didn't go to plan, as you'll find out why in the next load of pictures :(
Let's just say that rust became a big issue!...

looks epic on those wheels (y)

I had an electric blue one back in 1996, I remember the engine bay being a right b*****d to do anything in.

Any pics of it mate? Would love to see it!

I agree, but I'm thankful there's not many electrics on these older Renaults, which makes fixing stuff a little less daunting :ROFLMAO:

We parked it in the garage during the end of 2017, and started stripping it all down ready for it going to the body shop.

I also had the engine taken out which was being shipped up to Mark Galvin for a full engine rebuild.

not really no. Althought your does look nice.

Had a few 205 Gti's between 2010 and 2013 and would probably have another one of those, but never really been drawn back to 5 ownership.
I've never been in a 205... definitely something I'd love to own one day! Has to be the 1.9 though or mi16
Following, love a 5 GTT. My first one was a tungsten grey, and my second was too and the third was an electric blue. I'd definitely caused me all this pain with years of Renaultsport ownership that followed 😂.
Nice bud! What do you own now then?

Just sold my 182 after 7 years ownership but still have a broken mk3 clio 200 and my daughter has a twingo 133 so still got plenty to stress over. I'd love another 5 though and that new Alpine could be the step into an electric car for me.
Keep the updates coming mate👍.

Definitely have my eye on the R5 E for 2024... I hope it looks as good in person as it does on the pics!

I see Alpine released a couple concept images on their version of it a few days ago?

Yeah both versions of the new 5 look good to me, even the new Renault logo is similar to the one from the 90's so it's a shame that renaultsport is no more.

That 5 on Collecting Cars is lush, wonder what it will end up selling for...
I bought mine when they were still affordable, thankfully!

I might stick my name down on a 5 E, just not sure yet, I'm not a fan of electric cars at all :ROFLMAO:

So, after we had it taken to the garage to strip some more bits off ot, we realised that it needed a bit more love than initially exepected!

Here's some pics from when we first starting stabbing away at the body work... as you should be able to see as well, the sunroof has made the roof buckle slightly

So, because the sunroof f'd the roof skin. We had to find a new roof to replace it woth.

Thankfully, one of my friends had this red roof laying round in pretty good condition. We started chopping away at the old roof and soon got the new one on

We managed to get the bay painted first, along with dressing it up a bit with stickers and some new brackets.

The engine was dropped in next, but I'll post up some pics of the rebuild now
