Fixed 50, which filter do you have?

  2.2 bar shed.
None, they do nothing for image quality. Also, ruining a front element on a 50 is rather difficult unless you actually place it down on a spike. Circular Polarizer/8(12) stop ND would be what I'd look at.

disagree with all the above - £80 might be cheap but its cheaper to replace a £5-£10 UV when it gets scratched than it is to replace an £80 lens ;)

my 1.4 is a £300 lens .. id rather not scratch it as its "cheap"

Even the 1.4 is recessed enough that you would have to have gone full r****d to manage to damage it. I don't bother with anything on my 50, I have a UV and CPL for my others but they are both 77mm. The UV only goes on when I am going to be in a dusty environment or when they are lots of kids about.

If you really want to get something then the CPL or ND would be the one to go for.

Don't bother with UV filters, waste of money imho. Modern cameras deal with UV anyway.

Also, if you're careless enough to damage the UV filter, then you don't deserve to have the lens! ;)

Same as AndyRS really, I only bother with a 77mm UV on the 100-400 and the 24-105 as they stand me at a couple of grand but on a £60 (when I bought it) nifty fifty I don't bother. If I had the 50mm f1.2L that would be a different matter altogether ;)
