Flaps under 182 bumper

What are the two grey holes, with flaps for under the bumper, into the boot.

Is this for air flow out of the car, or sound in???

Another time it comes in handy is when airbags are deployed. Rapid inflation of those bad boys and cabin pressure has to vent somehow.

ive seen an idiot that sealed those up on a 206, had a crash and perforated his ear drums.

Must have done a thorough job, I cant see silicon sealer or similar holding it shut when an airbag goes off, lol.
