Floor hinged accelerator pedal

  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
The same type you will find in nearly every BMW and some Honda's.
Are there any known conversion kits out there to allow this to do be done on the 1*2 (or any other car for that matter) ?

Its not something i've investigated in much depth yet but surely there must be a way for this to be done?

Nothings impossible, however the floor pan is not well suited to it & a decent AP or the likes pedal kit is not cheap. You've also got FBW that would possibly need to be converted to cable in order for most systems to work.

The germans have used them forever it seems. Makes sense seeing that your ankle hinges the same way!

I want to see if the standard pedal set up can be altered to allow a floor mounted pedal face to be retro fitted to the pedal 'stalk' without actually altering the FBW setup. Some have a sort of slide mech on the back of the pedal.

The FBW sensor is above the pedal, so it would need to be relocated elsewhere to work with the new pedal position - it would be a massive PITA for the result matey.

Why? Im not talking about altering the actual pedal unit or position at all, just if there is a way to make the current set up work with a hinged floor mounted pedal face. I.e. remove the existing foot pad and see if it would work in some way with a hinged pedal.

Pour example.

  Nothing at the mo :(
oh i see.. so the pedal itself stays in the safe place.. but like the footrest it has one of them on it instead..i gotcha

I can't see it being difficult to do.
The only problem I can see is that unless you use a professionally manufactured kit to modify it, your insurance company could use it as a walkaway excuse if you had a bump.

not sure that would work though as the top of the pedal would be the part that goes up and down so you couldnt have anything fixed to it other than the hinge unless it moved with the pedal.
im not sure the seating possition in the clio would suit a floor hinge pedal though tbh as you sit quite high up in it.

I'm designing one of these for my car as we speak :) Head and shoulders above a top mounted one.

If I can design and fabricate a faesible design, they'll be up for sale so let me know if you seriously want one and I'll send you pictures of the finished product.

Please do. If you can come up with a decently made, tried and tested conversion kit, i'll bite your arm off for one!

I'm at my day job tomorrow and Tuesday, so I'll crack on with it on wednesday and drop you a PM mate. I'll be fabricating mine out of Titanium, but it's massively expensive, I'll try and get an aluminium one knocked up too so you can have a look.

Sounds great mate. Look forward to hearing from you!

Me too please, but not the price for the titanium one... already made me want to cry with the thought of a titanium gear knob ;) lol!

Lol, yeah no worries mate. The retail price of Ti is mental, but it's so nice to work with and looks beautiful :) so everything that's going in mine will be titanium.

I'll definitely make up an aluminium one as well. It's still very nice quality Aluminium, aerospace grade, not tacky crap.

I hope you're going to use cadmium free bolts, screws etc on your pedal.

We have a selection of nuts and bolts which we produce ourselves, made from appropriate materials. Just to be 100% sure. No point putting up a great shed with crap nails eh...

I did several modules on material science as part of my motorsport engineering degree so I'm aware of titanium embrittlement ;)

Just checking. Better safe than sorry.

Does seem a shame to put your muddy boots on it though. :(

Of course, especially with Brakes! I actually keep a pair of race boots in my car just so I don't have to wear my muddy shoes :) sad I know, but I love driving in them.

And why not. You wouldn't play football in wellies afterall. Might make it a bit more interesting if they did though.

Out of curiosity, what do "we" do?

My dad owns a company called south east customs. Based in Sussex and specialises in making bespoke titanium components. Mostly been for race cars/bikes/sidecars thus far but we're branching into the road car Market now.

We also do cylinder head gas flowing and porting. My dad built race engines for motorcycles and then f1 powerboats for about 20 years, up until about 10 years ago. Just getting back to what he loves doing :)

I'm just learning as far as machining components goes, been at it for about 2 years now but there is an awful lot to learn.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound pretentious with the 'we', just habit!

Not at all. You + dad = we.

Great potential in Ti parts as weight loss is the most direct route to power gains.

I really want a gear knob off of you guys... So tempted but it's some dollah :(

Out of curiosity, could you engrave the gear pattern into it?

Absolutely, mine's going to have a heavy engraving with blue enamel paint to match the car.

We can also get it laser etched in more or less any colour you wish.

I guess that's the beauty of getting bespoke parts, you're not limited by what the manufacturer thinks will look good.

Spot on. The weight savings you can achieve using titanium are phenomenal... Hence most of our business being in motorsport. We've had a lot of interest from yacht racing teams recently too. I always figured that as a much more niche Market, but it seems not.

Thanks very much for your interest, always nice to know that the work you're doing is appreciated.

Hmmmm, ok, I may be in contact around payday for an aluminium gear knob with light engraving in the top. :)

Thanks mate.

Any time mate. You've got our number, that's available any week day at a sensible time. ( it's redirected to my dad's mobile when we're not at the workshop)

Not to be negative here, but why do you want to change Ollie? BMW style accelerators are a pain imo. They aren't the easiest to control the power with. I've driven a few cars, bmw, mini, porche and they all would be better to drive with a conventional pedal.

Alot of the problem is that the throttle pedal is set quite a lot further back than the brake pedal on a Clio. Coupled with the poor throttle response from the fbw, it makes it very difficult ( for me at least) to use the pedals effectively.

Driving my friends new Ctr really decided it for me. Just personal preference I guess.

I'm sure someones done a nice cheap mod on here to bring the accelerator up to in line with the brake pedal? Not worth a look?
