Given the excellent suggestion by Kerry-W yesterday for the open source version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe....

http://www.openttd.org/en/

I thought it would be useful to create a thread that included any other worthy suggestions. Please DO NOT post links to torrent sites for illegal downloads or cracked versions of games as these will be removed. This thread is purely for the open source or royalty-free software that people have found on the web.

A Colonization alternative...

And obviously OoLite, which is an Elite clone...

Any others - put your suggestions here! :)

Seen the "Free to play" link on the Genre tab on Steam store? Have quite a few MMPORGs on there atm, and one FPS iirc.

  Ibiza SC
TrackMania Nations Forever is awesome for free :)

Just a bit, I came 2nd in the UK EPS finals a couple of years back, won £600. Was rated #2 in UK at one point, probably still in the top 10 but don't have the time to train the maps, sigh.

xD (StevieM was such a ghey name)

Does it still install DRM s**t though? Originally it didn't, then they changed it later so it installed StarForce.

The developers of that need to be hunted down by Leeroy, the homosexual silverback gorilla, for an intimate and lengthy botty inspection. Brushed aside by hackorz, it did/does nothing other than cripple genuine buyers of the games. It still cracks me up how early StarForce enabled games often have an offical patch available to bypass it.

Is it .dmg or .exe?

It downloads as a zip....

Then extracts the following files and folders...

At a guess, I'd say that the Mac install is in the OpenTTD.app directory? Not sure on Macs....

Any of you old enough to remember Star Control 1 & 2 might be interested in the Ur-Quan Masters...

https://sourceforge.net/projects/urquanmastershd/

Still regarded as one of the best PC games of all time. It clearly shows its age - but there's a hidden gem in there. Played it death in Super Melee mode with the other lads in the house at uni. Seems quite recent - then you remember that it was over two decades ago!

OpenTTD is the masterstroke of building sims....until Cities Skylines arrived
Wait until you start modding in tech-trees to make the cities actually develop. It can get properly involved.
