From power to manual steering on my 172 Cup, the verdict...

F***ing brilliant!

I was hoping some kind of an improvement, but the feel I'm now getting through the wheel is sublime.

As the tyres just push past their limit and into understeer, it feels like I've got a chunk of tyre rubber in each hand and I can feel it slipping and tearing across the tarmac. Best thing is you can feel it build up to that, so holding it at the optimum slip angle should be a little easier/clearer.

Also, the wheel self-centres really strongly now so that should help me work on unwinding the steering when exiting.

So, it should make me quicker, and because the wheel's now only 300mm...fitter too LOL

Can't comment on power or weight removal yet as I've been taking it easy with the throttle on my new clutch...I don't want to fry it just yet.

Wouldn't say it's a good idea for a daily driver so far, but I am a PAS pansy.

Mark, sounds like you are getting close to my Elise territory here, less weight, no PAS. I agree on the self centering, and the fact that it feels as though you are actually holding the wheels in your hand.

Be interested to know the weight loss now....

Steering feels ok on the 1*2's, miles better than the new electric systems, but try an old pug. Makes all new pas cars feel numb.

Talking about 205's and pas, there used to be mod of removing the pipes etc of a pas rack to make it non-pas, not as ideal as a non-pas rack, but nearly. can it be done to a clio rack do you think?

everyday use is fine as long as yu dont have to park in tight spaces all the time, love the way mine feels and its one of the best mods I have done to mine so far, I let Mark drive mine before he made his decision about ditching the PAS.
As to how heavy it is, not much difference when driving but heavy when parking, the feel is really good when you corner hard and you can feel everything even when the tyres are just starting to lose grip which I have found allows you to get a bit better control and push the car just that little bit harder.
As far as I know its a Clio DCI rack, one of the motor factors I use supplied the rack on mine after I told them what I wanted, so got the same for Mark.
Major difference in weight, lets say the rack is around 1/4 of what the ps set up weighs if not less.

mine feels terrible at the moment no feel through it at all - although i do still have the (albeit inoperative) electric column aswell,, so im thinking im loosing a bit of feel through this??

no no, my car was a 1.2 16v with electric steering, its now converted to a 182 engine but the electric column (it dosn't work) is still in place.

im wondering if the fact that im turning the electric motor with the wheel and rack is taking the feel away

Non-pas is great for feeling the limits of grip, using 100% of available grip through the corners and getting the power down on the exit. It'll probably result in less tyre wear too.

Imo one benefit of pas is that when it all goes sideways its easier to wind and unwind plenty of lock quickly. With track tyres and no pas the steering wheel can be pretty violent when each tyre looses and regains grip and if you need more than crossed arms will give it can be diffcult!

The 306 pas steering feel is just brilliant, much better than the clio (which is still better than most).

I'm enjoying driving a pas track car after having a 106 rallye for a few years. Might try non-pas sometime in the future.
