Front End Light Under heavy breaking..Why???

Im relativly new to drivin but why after travelling at speed under heavy breaking (without ABS kicking in) does the front end go light in the steering wheel it seems to want to sway from side to side can't work out why??? can anyone help, it's most probably my poor driving technique but on a short off ramp it's a bit disconcerting
