Gaz Coilovers... I'll Need a Mortgage

  Fiesta ST2 MP215
Saying that OP in the sales section Ben L3 something is breaking his Arctic, he's got Spax fronts and Konis on the back going for cheap at the mo, springs too but not the 60MM you after, you could buy these shocks only and get some Cooksports or similar on their own? the Spax Shocks he has got are adjustable.

Yeah I'll sign up tonight and fish around some more, no ones said anything about the gaz coilovers really, they offer 60mm and are adjustable, Ktec have obviously well overpriced them. If I found a decent condition set of gaz's for a sensible price, could this be the way to go?

Personally I wouldn't they aren't highly rated they just look the b****cks, if I wanted a cheap set id go with Ktecs own branded ones or some 2nd hand spax or Billys.

  A special one.
As ive already said my spax are up for sale although ive already had a pm about them on the back of this thread.

What makes me laugh about this thread is the OP's adamant about having it lowered 60mm, which is super low on these. This in turn with any coilover on the road WILL make it handle worse than a standard road car.

The two coilover units I'd go with if I had to though are Bilsteins and FK Konigsports. Bilsteins with a little drop will ride the road fantastically and be very compliant but no dampening adjustment, the FK's are slightly harsher on the road but do offer dampening adjustment and are very reliable.

I wouldn't go with any other new coilover unit for under a £1000. Cup shocks and cooksport springs in reality do everything you need it to, they even lower it to a good standard whilst being good to drive on.

In not adamant about 60mm but I've seen threads with it as low as that and it makes the car look tidy and people have had no problems until they space the wheels out. The only reason I'm persistent is because I want to buy right the 1st time, I don't have money bags to throw at the thing as I have my karting to look after, that's why in asking for people's advice.

I'm quite happy with my £270 suspension, nearly new cup shocks and top mounts and new Cooksport springs. Nice drop, rides well on the roads. Takes abuse well and it'll last. No need to set up the ride height as its fixed.

Could be stiffer but for road use its pretty much perfect. You can really push it and it doesn't feel unsettled.

This is how it sits with the rear stripped out.

Long term I might go for the BC coilovers, montube with adjustment and they last well. Unlike GAZ which rusted within 12 months and 1000 miles (car was used on dry days only too)

Cup shocks + cooksport springs. When you go lower you alter the geometry negatively. In which case you may as well get super budget coilovers for form over function.

See how much the cheapest Ktec ones are with the 5% discount.

Ive used Gaz coilovers on a clio and was quite pleased with them.

This is my car using them, lowered approx 50mm at the time, seemed to handle ok:

Have gone to KW now which I prefer, but they are a lot dearer too.

I think Gaz are the best of the budget makes TBH, I would certainly take them over Spax ones, and unlike spax they dont go bankrupt every year or two and declare all guarentees null and void etc, and their turn around on servicing them is spot on too.

Ok Tom thanks for the advice. I'm going to look for a set of Bilsteins 2nd hand that are decent condition, either that or wait and bear the brunt and buy some new ones.

Does the Bilstein setup have a harsher ride than the standard?, not that i'm bothered if it would be, just out of curiousity.

Thanks for the help everyone btw..

Not massively different, there's less roll but they're not that stiff really. the Bilsteins are a nice ride on the road. I've heard a few people saying they're too soft for track use though.

Just a regular 182 or the Turbo monster you have? just Curious as it pisses past some of them on that vid but the Silver ones seems to pull away with some mental pace out of corners.

Was in my turbo, the silver one in the video (Mike from MWM, cammed and bodies) I was just following around for a bit and not trying to pass, as his dad was in the passenger seat of my car so we were just watching him for a while.

I have a whole thread about the ride height and the GAZ GHA suspension (the cheaper 500 quid version)
http://www.cliosport.net/forum/show...-GAZ-GHA-owners&highlight=gaz+gha+ride+height
Short story told, they won't go a real 60 mm drop unless you remain with no shock travel and ride on the bump stops on the front.
I have them lowered about 25-30 mm now (front) and the bump stops cut in half to gain some extra travel
Getting the front even lower will mess up the roll center as the wishbones outer ends will point upwards and the handling won't improve (although that's about what the theory says)
Otherwise I'm pleased with the kit
