Gearbox and gripper oil change

im havin issues with my gripper it's a bit noisy well it's cluncking at low speeds whilst turning the wheel left or right. Before spending a lot of money getting the box out and getting the gripper serviced I've been advised to swap the oil, so I've bought some Castrol B373 also would it be worth adding some Redline limited slip friction modifier from demon Tweeks the advise came from a few sprinters who use this stuff and run Grippers.

Any advice??

Don't put it in the box is my advice. It'll f**k the synchros or gear dog teeth, if not both mate. The castrol B373 is too slippery for them from what I've seen of the jc5's that have run on it.

Redline MTL is what I've run in a Quaife diffed/Quaife straight cut gearbox before and it worked extremely well. Yeah, quaifes ain't a plate diff, but it showed no signs of wear in the box after a full season of 400+bhp/lbft abuse and I used to knock the s**t out of it too.

As above I just had my gripper box rebuilt and was advised to pick an oil that protects the box rather than one that protects the diff. B737 destroyed my syncros in a short time , so no just went for a good quality 75/90.
I was also told not to use a shockproof oil as the additives in them can block the smaller oil ways in a box.
How noisey is your diff ? it is normal for them to knock a bit at low speed while turning , and depending on the ramp angles in the box some are worse than others.

It's really noisy mate you can feel it through the steering wheel , just don't know which oil to order I'm getting different advise from a lot of people who have a gripper.

As the guys have said, don't use oil to protect the diff, the box is weaker. What age is the gripper as they should be clunky at low speed / feel them / hear them if they are the early ones. Mine did it all the time before it was due it's service where the plates were changed to the new ones (removes the clunkyness at low speeds).

Also how aggressive has it been set up and how many miles have you done?

The Gripper is 3 years old now, the set up is Gripper LSD tarmac setting 40/60 ramps with Gripper CWP 13/59 FD with Alen key bolts. ( fitted by Agency )

That'll have the older style plates in then still mate, so the noise is part and parcel of a gripper I'm afraid. The newer plates have oil grooves in them to allow a small amount of lubrication to stop the creaking/clunking at slow speeds.
The settings will be causing some of the aggression as well.

This is not normal mate it was when I first got the car it was a bit noisey but now you can here it from outside the car as people have come over to me saying my cars making a strange noise,
I'm just going to change oil first then see how it goes

It's the cheaper option of the 2 mate, so it's gotta be worth a try first.

Opie oils do the redline, not sure on the millers though. The redline is about £60 for enough to fill the box! Not cheap, but very very good.

There's no oil in existence that will be suitable for a fwd plate diffed gearbox unfortunately. It's also worth remembering that any gearbox with plate diffs fitted will need to be drained substantially more often than one with an open diff as the plate diffs are continually contaminating the oil.

As with everything, there's always a drawback somewhere in some way shape or form.

5th gear selector fork was mullered to say the least, oil was pretty much metallic when it was drained out so thinking contaminated oil giving issue between the plates. was also locking up a touch low as well.

Let's change the oil and I know were I stand then. In my mind paying £60 to see if that cures it is a no brainier before spending big money.

A few people use Castol B373 and think it's the dogs so Carl we have a choice of the Castrol or Redline lol I ordered Castrol yesterday and redline today.......

Ah, the good old oil question with plated LSDs.

Being a plated diff you have an issue ; choosing an oil which will work best with the gearbox or best with the diff, but not necessarily for both. Of course, going to a Helical diff gets around this issue but then plated diffs tend to offer a 'better' experience when on the limit.

This question will always divide opinions. I say go for something GL4 rated and keep on top the oil changes (i.e ; yearly). It will put a question mark on the life of the gearbox but otherwise it may be the diff that suffers...
