The air filter box needs come off to get to the fill/level plug, it is a plastic black or white butterfly at the front of the gearbox about half way up facing the radiator. People with long skinny arms can reach it. The drain plug is under the box and you will need a 8mm. tool, it's the same as the normal oil sump tool. Give the oil plenty of time to drain and then refill the new oil via the butterfly hole until it dribbles out. Use a funnel with a length of suitable hose to get the new oil in.

also when you say the drain plug is under the box, would i get to this from underneath the car while the cars jacked up like i would for the engine oil?

Just done mine Sunday.
Yeah, jack it up, basin under it and unscrew the sump plug
I made sure I could get the refill plug off first before emptying my oil lol.
Let it drain, put plug in, refill , butterfly plug back on.

Was honestly a doddle!

Talked to 1 bloke on here that's done 144 thousand miles in his, he changed engine oil every 5000 miles and gearbox oil every 15000 miles.

No idea on the recommended interval.

Postin' these from the service manual because they're relevant.

Austin, The filter has to be taken out then there is couple bolts you loosen front and back, can't remember where they are now but you'll find them easily, jack the car up, undo drain plug, let the car down until allthe oil drains then jack up again to fit the plug,a new washer will be fine.

This threads turned out ideal! Thanks everyone
What siza washer would i need? The same as i have for the engine oil?

Get a washer, its a copper crush one so best to renew.

Wish id thought before, ive just got my bits in the post from wests on here, would of got 2 washers if i knew they were the same
The sump washer has a rubber bit on, i take it the o e for the gearbox would ve the same?

Am I right in thinking the gearbox oil filter isn't easy to change on both manual and automatic Clio, so you just usually only change the gearbox oil?

The filter on the manual is incredibly difficult to change, its invisible and doesn't exist so getting tools on it is hard. I've not changed the filter on an auto Clio before though (depends which model) but on all the auto cars I've had you need to remove the gearbox sump to get to the filter, once the sump has been removed the filter is generally quite accessible and easy to do.

Good to know - post #11 above confused me, but I think he's talking about the air filter. On a 182 I think. I've a 2007 mk3 manual 1.4 and I think the filler plug is accessed up the front of the gearbox. Changing the oil soon for the first time.
From what I read the gearbox oil filter on the auto may as well be invisible. There no sump to lower and it's a major job to get to. Also got a 2004 mk2 1.4 auto and planning to do the oil on that too.

I think you'll notice if the auto box has a sump or not when you get to the job.

If there's an obvious bottom panel that can be unbolted then go for it.

Did the 2007 mk3 1.4 manual today. A 10minute drive with gear changes warmed it up. The old stuff not too bad but needed changing. Some small metal fine grit, nothing big, but big stuff probably won't drain out anyway, prob just sits on the bottom. Very easy, nothing needed removed, filler plug accessed front of gearbox from underneath. slow to fill. Hardest thing was putting the filler plug back on, a bit awkward.
1m or less of 12 inner/15mm outer clear tubing on a small funnel (used 2nd largest in the set) fitted perfectly, fed down from above. Just had to be careful not to overfill as tubing was a tight fit and filling was slow.

Used an old washing up bowl to catch the oil as I find the plastic cans hard to avoid splashing - not deep enough surface. Once I forgot to take the air hole plug out and it just overflowed everywhere !

Good work - I did a quick google for the auto box, seems you can buy the filter but not much info on how to change the filter!

Might be worth fining a workshop/servicing style book for this as the auto will be more fussy about re-fil level and temperature.

I'm not going to bother about the oil filter, too big a job for me. Got an infrared temperature gun to get it at the right temp. Just waiting for the oil to arrive.
