Glowing hot manifold, restricted performance, lots of warning lights!!!

  Impreza Wagon
The other halfs 03 Clio 1.2 16V broke down today and now won't run at all. The revs stick at around 2k and the manifold starts to glow red, brakes go hard and you get the emissions warning light and the other coil one.

I suspect it's a blocked CAT however could it be anything else?

glowing red manifold -jesus its really not happy!

I would second the blocked cat, whip it off and have a look (maybe a good time to decat :))

Blocked CAT is the most liekly cause but a faulty/stuck injector coil can also cause this though its rare for them to constantly pump fuel.

Easiest thing to DIY is remove the CAT, run the engine and see if it runs smooth and okay again.

had this before. its the throttle body, i know it sounds unrelated. and its a reet cnut to change but it should also cure your problem :D

Is removing the throttle body easy and fiddly or just difficult? and will it be obvious its blocked or knackered?

Also will cleaning this make any difference?

Removing the cat is a piece of cake disconnect from down pipe and remove just after cat 13mm I smashed mine out just for sound...

Assume if the cat was blocked it wouldn't run at all but I spouse the must be some emissions getting put for it to..,

Yeah and would also explain the brakes going solid like the engine was switched off, check that vac pipe before going to the hassle of removing anything else tbh.

If it's glowing red then the engine is running very lean. Lean = very hot

I would be VERY cautious running it as it will crack a piston if it hasn't already

Most likely cause is the throttle body or a vacuum hose has come off - it's getting waaaay too much air.

If it's none of those then it will be an injector has died so it can't fuel

Just had the TB off and it was a bit dirty but not bad at all. I've cleaned it up but still got the same problem. Its goin to the garage tomorrow as the cat has rusted on and I can't be arsed to tackle that!

With regards to the manifold glowing red I only saw it last night when the RAC were having a look. I hope it's not damaged the engine!!!

Also I couldn't find a vacum hose on the back of the block so I gave up.

if the cat was blocked itwould be making a wooshing ( lots of air passing) kinda noise.

is it glowing across 4 exhaust ports or just the one ? may be worth whipping the plugs out and check what colour there showing as that willgive you a very good indication as to how its running.(check the plug tip ... black-sooty= rich mocha0light brown= fine white-or molten = lean)

check the vac pipe that goes down to the brake servo that could be your problem

Ive given up and the local garage can battle it out with it! However on the way the tow eye ripped thru the front bumper, what a great start to the day!!

Quick update: they changed the throttle sensor on the pedal and in the engine bay and finally got it running. However they said they have to trick the ecu into making the car run correctly or it still goes back to the original problem? They started it up on the phone and it was spot on however a few starts later the problem is back!

They've suggested a new TB which I can fit myself but is this the problem? Their other suggestion is ECU which will prbly be very expensive!

No air leak found....

Fred, I tried a spare map sensor I had and it was the same however I'll try another over the weekend. If not it's coming your way I'm afraid!!

No rush, I've got it back and it's drivable however eml and emissions lights are constantly on. On a couple of occasions it's gone back to it's original problem which is solved by leaving your foot on the accelerator turning the engine off then back on and it starts working again!

Going to change the map and throttle body this week then I'll update the thread again.....

Don't forget to whip battery positive lead off / on , ignition on/off a few times b4 starting this resets the throttle valve :))

Finally fixed the problem, fitted a new (second hand) throttle body and it's sorted. All the lights on the dash even went out straight away.
