golf mk2 gti vs clio 172

  03 RS clio 172 flameR
ok, heres the crack. going to see my brothers in febuary on the isle of wight, now ones a family man so drives a v6 laguna, however my other brother isnt! he drives a mk2 golf and is obsessed, now i been in it when it was standardish, about 115bhp, now hes done engine rebuild, cams, intake, matched inlets etc, prob about 140bhp now! first time i went there with the clio the golf was off the road for rebuild so i constantly ripped it calling it a coal powered shed! he called the clio the frog eating surrender monkey.

so now the problem is he is back on the road and better than ever and im jus curious, anyone raced a mk2 golf in a 172? whats gonna be the outcome, this is jus gonna be a stright drag race prob becouse he takes corners like he is on his way to hell and im not going to follow. clio MAY be mapped by rs tuner when i go down.

we family so no agression will be shown and it will be on a abandoned industial estate where i can gurantee no cars

  Nippy white cup
The mk2s are quite heavy (similar to a 172 iirc) so even with all the mods I think you would still pull away in every gear imo

yes for some unknown reason, this mk2 golf is quick, it didnt have much BHP when i first went in it (112ish) but it was still pretty quick. so will be a very close call imo

  Mental 172 Cup
i raced a mk2 golf with a gti block and a 8v head and a 1.6 box so it was very torquey and i did manage to beat that! i imagine you will be fine mate!

edit : he was running somewhere between 140 and 160 bhp

  172 cup
aerodynamics on mk2 golfs are shocking. You should slaughter him to be honest especially when you get onto about 80+

ok lets say its a race to 60, or a race to 100, any ideas on the outcome then?

shall i jus have my other brother video this little duel for a final post on this thread nxt month?

  172 Phase 1 & 172 Ph
172 for the win, i had an 8v MK2 GTI before my 172 and even if its now pushing 140ish your still a fair few bhp ahead...

Mk2 Golf GTi is NOT heavy car, it's a myth people think they are because they're a "Volkswagen". Weight is around 980kg, less than the Clio and about the same as other hatches of the time (309GTi, Astra GTE etc), that's why they are quick for their power. Even with 140bhp it'll still only be the same power as the 16v GTi which is still a second off a 172 to 60.

in 1980.
aint the 0-60 of the 8 valver about 9 (yawn) seconds.

so the book says but its bullshit, its about 7.5

its around the same weight as the clio coz its over 1000kg by a little bit.
but its not the stats that worry me becouse i know that statisticlly id nail it but when i go out in his golf it jus seems quicker than it should, maybe thats just how i remembered it coz he was driving it like a nutcase!

Yea they are quick cars though for their power. All weight claims I've seen are comfortably under 1000kg though.

the hanyes says little over 1000kg, what ever it is, its not quite light enough coz im pretty confident hes going to be crying when i leave him behind.

  53 Clio's & counting
its impossible to say as who has done his work, how does he know how much power he has etc?

the 16vs are nippy, better with cams in, i had one with 166 bhp @ the wheels, the 8v's are not that great, pull well but nothing special,is it 8 or 16v chap?

  RB 182 Cup
if its an 8valve its not going to have "extra 8v torque" and you will smash it into dust. my brother had a mk2 8v gti with cam, gas flowed head the lot and my old 1.2 16v was just as quick, not alot in it

The mk2 Golf GTI (8v) will do 0-60 in about 8.1-8.5 seconds (depending on whoever tested it/you believe). The car only has 112~bhp but it is lighter than a 172 cup. Not too sure how quick it will be with what he has done but I would say you would have the edge :)

  03 RS clio 172 flameR
im pretty sure he will get nailed, will be funny coz he seems to think that its one of the best cars on earth haha, hes had about 6 of them in his time, chances are im going to have the rs tuner remap before i go up against him, will that give me more edge? also a posibillty of full inlet/head matching!
