Graham's OCD ph3 DCi sport rep v2

Here we go again! Never did I think this would happen but with a few friends breaking Clios and the red shed sitting sorry on the drive needing some TLC the inevitable has started to happen. We did briefly put the car up for sale but it started to leak quite badly and after doing the maths, with an annual service, mot, tax and insurance, the car for £35 a month to run, it was a no-brainer to keep, saving the 3 series for more occasional use. It also opens up the possibility to get a slightly nicer weekend car in the future if this one is dependable and nice to drive.

I've known this flame red DCi for a few years now after helping Ren's mum buy it about 4 years ago now when it has just ticked over 67k. Fast forward a few years and I ended up buying it for £600, using it for a bit, selling it to a friend for £300 and then ended up buying it back for £200. It's one of the most basic Clios I've ever seen with manual mirrors, no rear speakers and a single piece rear bench void of headrests. It does however have A/C which is good and silver surround clocks (good for cruise control) so in that department the spec is helpful for the end goal.
Pic of car before starting any work on it.

If you've ever read my previous project thread on the last DCi I had, there were no half measures and I intend this car to be the same. I don't intend to spend anywhere near as much money on this one though and we're hoping to have a fully running rep for well under £1000. There will only be one or two things I'll do differently this time, that being automatic headlights. On my previous DCi I managed to get auto wipers but never wired in the lights. Here's a piccy of how that one ended up at it's peak.

So far then.....Last weekend @TomSmith123's 182 was just about to be taken to the scrappies so I removed the rain sensing windscreen and set about fitting this weekend with @Martin. It's not a job I'd really like to repeat because the glue was so difficult to get out of the cartridge you really do need an electric gun for it. No leaks though and it took about 2 hours in total.

Yesterday I swapped over the whole interior with some 172 seats from @Kelv and seatbelts, carpet, dash trims and door and door cards courtesy of @AlexW. Already it's a much nicer and quieter place to be. The door looms have now given in electric and heated mirrors which the dash loom was wired for but the door looms weren't At the same time I put in some of the better speakers you get in a 182 and will change the headunit to a cabasse auditorium in the future. Got the interior changed in about 90 minutes which I was pleased with! Everything was soaked.

Today I popped down to see @stevem42 who was a huge help with parts on my old rep and current track car. In his goldmine of parts there was a full 172 body kit. Before fitting this I need to fit the widetrack conversion which has been sitting in the back garden for over a year now!
IMG_2119.JPG

Next job, wiring. On the beautiful carpet I've got climate control, cruise control, automatic headlights and headlight washers de-pinned from a 182 loom and ready to go in the DCi loom at some point over the next few weeks :)
IMG_2124.JPG

This is of course going to be quite a fast moving project and not much to update once it's done but I thought people might be interested to see how I convert the car. It's also fun to share the knowledge I've gained doing my previous conversion. Now I can do this conversion and all the wiring with no hiccups along the way!

Cheers for reading :)

Looks great good progress already. Im going to upgrade the wiring on my dci65 this year as its the same povo spec with no extras. Any plans for the engine ?

Best to get a loom from the car with all the extras and then spend hours and hours looking at wiring diagrams! No plans for the engine really because I want to maintain it's economy. That said I am going to decat it and if an intercooler kit comes up cheap enough I'll snap it up :) Injectors and pump aren't the best in this car but that's an item to be sorted way down the road as and when they go.

Agreed probably worth changing full loom. Im on povo spec n1 uch so no cc upgrades either without changing that. Are the looms diesel specific ?

I have a dci 100 intercooler and pipework in stock. Always wondered if i can get a modified dci80/100 map flashed onto my ecu for cheap upgrade. Not after tons of power but a little bit more would be nice.

They are yeah. It’s white difficult to find a fully specced loom from a diesel, hence why I’m making my own. They did exist though. Main difference with the dci loom is EPAS.

80 has different injectors and boost pressure so the map isn’t a direct swap. I tried an 80 ecu in my old rep and it didn’t work well.

Nice to see another dCi rep!

I’ll be following this thread from now on!

Yeah boi. Love a good rep. Have you got sport suspension? If so did you have custom shafts made up?

Heated mirrors??
All clios with electric mirrors have heated rear view mirrors which come on with the rear screen heater :)

Heated rear view, or wing mirrors?

No way. I did not know this.

Wing mirrors! I’m calling it what Renault call it on their diagrams, which I appreciate is a little misleading! It’s good for drying rain and condensation off though.

I’ve got 172 Apex springs but thought about full conversion. Only thing is that dCi 100 is a JR5 box so would have to be full custom shaft (or just sleeved with CDS) and the hub splines are 23 like the V6 instead of 21 splines like a 1*2.

I’ve thought about mating my hub flange with sport hub carriers for 172 brakes... but I’ve got a 172 now and this is just to pooter about in hahaha

Everything else on it is 172 apart from running gear. The only thing I’d like to add is cruise...

What colour is the original one you built. Looks really smart. This is going to be a good build too by the looks of it. You are not hanging around!!

Yeah it’s a pain on the 100. The shafts are a bummer. You’ve got a disc rear axle going which is nice, half way there! Cruise is an easy mod in yours, think the loom already has it in so it’s just a case of plugging the bits in and programming the clocks.

It was Gris boreal Mv/nv632. It was a lovely car until the engine and fuel system died. I should have really kept it and just changed the engine. This one is definitely going to be a quick transformation, parts are available so I’m totally focused on getting it working trumps ASAP!

Yeah I’ve swapped the standard one for a 182 one as my got bent (check my thread[emoji24][emoji23]) I may try and slap cruise control on as it does a hell of a lot of miles!

I'll check! When you swapped did you have to change the ABS sensors? I heard the 182 sensors don't work and you have to use 100 sensors on a rear disc conversion with 44t abs.

Good work so far, I do like a flamer!
I've always wanted a flamer so can't wait for it to be finished!

I've wanted a decent flamer front bumper for ages, and you find that!!
All about knowing where to look ;)

I used my dCi 100 stubs on the 182 beam. But yeah you have to use 100 sensors on a rear beam conversion, i have a dCi 100 team beam here as I’m breaking a 100. I don’t have a drivers side stub as I sold that haha. But 172 stubs should work with 100 sensors

If the part number is 8200186299 on the ABS sensor I'll buy it from you.

Are we all coming back out of the woodwork on here again

Although .... my engines bigger than yours :tongueout:
I never left! You're is really Alex's though

Love this.

Iv also got a dci65 which i was making into a rep after my subaru decided to snap the crank.. iv not done much though as iv had to have surgery on my knee. Iv got a fair few parts waiting to go on once i can fully bend my knee again.

heres mine https://www.cliosport.net/threads/dans-dci-daily.814427/
Had a read through your thread, sunroof is blooming nightmare isn't is! With yours because it's a bit older you don't have ABS sensor issues so wide track and rear beam is a straight swap. You just need to put on 26t abs rings for a few quid. Honestly the difference is crazy compared to lowering a standard suspension set up. Careful those APEX aren't bottoming out the shocks

Never did I , just ended up building more crap than actually driving them Hence buying frankenderv from Alex, this one might actually get finished unlike my 2 mk1 clios ( one 1.9 Dti , and one with a 1.9 PD engine )

Anyone that follows me on insta will have seen I did a bit on the red shed yesterday. Managed to get the wings, front bumper, skirts and headlights on.

On friday night I glued the sideskirt brackets on with tiger seal so they were ready for saturday.

The headlights underwent a HUGE transformation with the help of a 3m correction kit. Having never used one of these before I was blown away at it's effectiveness. I have so many spare discs I could easily do another few sets. Each side took me about 40 minutes. On the o/s xenon I had to do a small repair to the adjuster. In common style it had broken and bits of white plastic were sitting in the bottom of the unit. Unfortunately one of the inner liners I got sent was from a ph1 so didn't fit but another is on the way.

Everything has been filmed so far and the videos will trickle out as I get time to thrown the clips together. There really is no editing for this series so it's not where near as polished as the normal stuff. Hopefully it's a good watch for those that vaguely care!

Next weekend I'm getting a load of parts together to complete the bits I need for the full wide track conversion. The wheels are entertainingly lost in the arches with the sport wings on.
That means I'll be collecting a disc rear beam, springs, driveshafts and 172 wheels.

Looking good mate! Will you be spraying them grilles black as they're making me itch being all faded
Oh god no, that takes extra time.

Why did you glue the sideskirt brackets on mate?
Didn’t want to drill holes like they have on the sport. It’d open the sills up to rust. Bit of tigerseal does the trick. I did have to rivet the bottom of the skirt though.

I just sikaflex'd my sideskirts on and painting the grilles and badges will make it look 10x better when it's all done ;)

First of all - new video out this weekend on headlight restoration and fixing clio headlight adjusters. I'll post it in here when it's up but as it's the DCi build you won't get a YT notification.

I've done a lot to this car over the past couple of weeks. The body kit is now complete bar putting the arch liners in properly and the suspension has been fully wide tracked. That means 182 rear disc axle, dci 100 rear abs sensors, full sport front suspension including subframe, discs and calipers, 4th gearbox mount, extra castor wishbones, hubs, decat and 172 cup driveshafts. Those who follow me on insta will have seen a lot of this work being done but after 5 hours on Saturday and another 6 on Sunday the brakes were bled, the gearbox had new oil and the car was ready to go. I had some calipers in a spares box so used those and found a genuine set of pads laying around too! With this conversion my huge box of clio bolts came into it's own!

Ball joints, tie rods and track rods are almost brand new. The lowering springs I got from Alex but we have no idea what they are. The top mount bearings are shot though and need replacing. I have a set somewhere but can't for the life of me find them. It's the same story for some hand brake cables which are somewhere laying around. The car currently is in gear with some wood in front of the wheel. Pattern part cables are on their way.

None of the parts were cleaned up before putting them on the car because I just don't have the time and they'll only get gross anyway.

IMG_2625.JPG
IMG_2685.JPG
IMG_2686.JPG

I very stupidly left the hubs out to the scrap man who proceeded to take them before I realised the ABS sensors in the 172 hubs weren't going to fit the dci. DOH! £18 later and I've got some new ones.

IMG_2699.JPG
IMG_2701.JPG

What's left to do to finish off the suspension conversion
Swap front ABS sensors
Put new 44T abs rings on the front
Set up engine mounts properly as there's lots of vibration!
Bleed brakes again when ABS light is off as there is a bit of air in the lines
Fit hand brake cables
Fit 182 rear shocks.

For the rest of the conversion
Next job is wiring climate, auto lights, auto wipers, rear speakers, LED dash conversion, cabasse auditorium stereo. I bought a clio 197 wheel and airbag so will be fitting this after having a little spacer machined to allow proper fitment.
For the outside some satin chrome paint for the bullets, remove the "Extreme" decal, 172 wheels and some new number plates.

You may think think this is costing a bomb but so far it's been pretty cheap. Mainly thanks to having good friend though who are happy to help me out. This has so far been a hugely labour intensive process.

£175 bits from Alex,
£130 body kit
£40 seats
£40 for various parts like loom, climate set up, elec mirrors and windscreen
£10 doorcards
£15 windscreen glue
£20 gearbox oil
£10, drills and rivets
£9 tigerseal
£75 197 steering wheel
£20 headlight restoration kit
Decat, calipers, driveshafts, headlights etc I had laying around
Once I'm done I expect it to be about £800 including the car which really will be a great car for the money. I'll also sell the wheels and old body parts so it may possibly be less.

How the car currently stands...stay tuned.

As for the 197 steering wheel spacer, don’t get one milled just use a massive 5mm washer. I have a 197 wheel to go in my 172 haha

Of course I did! Never done it before, it took ages and got my hands filthy.

Nah going to get something machined up. I had a washer on the previous conversions I’ve done but it just never sat right with me. Need to sand out the back of the wheel for the cruise plug as it’s HUGE on the 182 compared to the 197
