Handbrake lever question

I’ve just had new rear calipers, pads and handbrake cables fitted. The handbrake works perfectly after a few clicks but today the lever came up way over 45 degrees with the ratchet clicking many times. The next time I tried it it was back to normal. It feels as though if the lever is not pulled perfectly straight up something seems to go amiss and the lever needs pulling extremely high to put the handbrake on.
Any idea what the issue is?

I'd be looking at the mechanism from underneath to see what it's doing when operated and making sure both back wheels are locking up properly

Just a thought plucked from my arse so could be useful or total b****cks but I'm thinking along the lines of the cables not being fully seated in their holes in the body of the car, as they can sometimes be a c**t to get them fully clipped into place despite feeling tightly in

I’ll try and have a look tomorrow. It does feel as though the lever comes up out of position when pulled. 4 clicks and the handbrake is on tight and other times is multiple softer clicks and the lever is twice as high.
