Has any 172FF owners had any run ins with Golf Mk4 Turbo's ?



I was wandering has anyone with a 172 (Preferably a 172FF) had any run ins agaist a Mk4 (1998-2003/4 i think) Golf 1.8 turbo ?

And was in a standard or remapped/non standard one ?

As i was just wandering how the wee Clio copes against them :S

I've heard the Golf is a bit of a barge and is useless in the corners :)

150bhp.
then a limited edition 180bhp in 2002/2003

172 should be quicker in all areas

ive had runs with both and both times i won, but the 180 was close

even with a remap that takes the to 200bhp they still weigh to much and are slight slower than the 172

i ahd a 172 cup and my mate had a chipped golf and he never won
 
I haven't been a member here long, but i'm sure D1CKY's every other topic is "Can my 172FF beat this.........." lol

No it's not. Going out and actually driving your car is fun. Hypothesising about which cars are quicker or slower than yours is pointless.

standard 1.8 turbo is 150bhp and they weight a tonne. the anniversary is 180 bhp and they still alos weight a tonne i hada lil play with a v5 4 motion the other week and there wasnt too much between it and my ph-quick. throught the twisities i recon ida had him!

I had one of the 115bhp 2.0 'GTi' Mk4s try it on the other day. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. 0-60 in 11 seconds for the win!

Well if the 172 is pretty much on par with an R32 i'd imagine it would hump it. I never bothered with them IIRC>

A Clio should do well against a standard car but they're very easy and reasonably cheap to tune with a remap, green injectors and a K04

i've had a Golf mk4 Turbo and a 172 (well, loads of 172's! lol) and the Clio is better in every single department.

Apart from driving position and Build quality, but that goes without saying.

I sold the Golf after 12 weeks as it was just too dull. Looked awesome with the Audi Comp wheels and black windows, but as a drivers car it was as much fun as a 1.6 Scenic.
 
I never lost a single race in my 172 cup when i had her
and killed Golfs for fun..
Even the v6 version which is kinda slow on take off but has a rapid top end..

Aren't R32s 6.2 to 60 and damn quick 30-50, 50-70 etc? The 4WD is awesome too.

:eek: Quicker to 100? Guessing its the low weight that helps? I'm getting a bit too tempted by the 172 now lol would love to give my uncle a run for his money in his R32. Although a mk5 will have it easier?

Really want the golf cos I think it would look better lower and BBS'd up than a ph1 or ph2 clio, image is important at uni lol But would love to hand any punk his ass if he tried it on with the 172. Dilemmas dilemmas!

Did you lose anything in your car to keep the weight down ?

To give your 172 the advantage ?

Or was it your mods that helped ?
 
Clios are underestimated Big Time..
I first found out about one when i flew in the right hand lane one
time to overtake one cuz i was in a hurry and it was a silver
mk 2 172 with a bird driving she dropped the Box and for the life of me
i could not get past her and i was driving a White Jaguar v6 X Type

Are we talking about the latest 197bhp Golf GTI turbo?!?

Intresting thread, Golfs have always been heavy cars unless the Golf is an Edition 30 then you can forget it, even at that i reckon it would still struggle.
I think the Megane is more of a comparrison than the Clio!

No the new ones are a 2.0 turbo.

I'm going on about the 1.8 turbo Mk4 ones(the style before the current Golf) ;)

Had a run with a 150 turbo yesterday! I was in a mondeo tdi ESTATE and he only pulled about two cars lengths in a few good b-road miles. We was trying to as at one point he locked up for a second, tyres smoke and stuff and I could hear a bit of spin pulling out onto new roads

Was one of the best little raced I’ve ever had.

Went past in the barge to give the thumbs up and he dare not look at me. Was funny!

I've smegged all over my mates gti 150, he gave up pretty easily lol. But thats cos it has about 3bhp per ton. the mk4 gti 180 with a remap would be a diff story.

saying that I've had a do with a mk5 gti and it couldn't catch me.

my mates got 1 its this months vw proformance mag and next months redline he hands me my ass every time very quick cars tuned
