Has anyone gone from a 172 Cup to a Trophy?

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
Having a mad moment here and considering switching to a 182 Trophy from my 172 Cup. Trophys are hovering around the £5k mark and I think my car is probably worth about £1700 (its coming up to 90k, but in good condition), so I would need to spend another £3300.

"Is it worth it?" is probably a stupid question to ask as it's all down to preference. Maybe the question is, is there any point in doing this? There's nothing wrong with my Cup at all, I'm just getting itchy feet.

Having driven both a trophy but a 182 cup, not a 172 cup, you can tell the difference in the suspension, how different the 182 cup is from the 172 cup I can not answer that, but you're probably better off keeping the cup, stick some good suspension on, kw/billies, some recaros's/ bucket seats and just maintain it, the cups are becoming so rare to find a good one, plus you know the history of you're cup.

I have thought about changing my 172 for a trophy in the past. But in realality you'll be paying more for in essence the 'same' car.

Besides 172 cups are faster ;)

I wouldn't bother if it was me. A good Cup is becoming increasingly hard to find, just look after the one you've got and maybe tastefully modify it if you feel the need.

Its a difficult question to answer really, once which can only really be answered by driving a Trophy.

The suspension really is something else.

Also, if you think about it, the diffference for you to change is £3300, but the Trophy already comes with Recaros (£750), decent suspension (£850) & s3xy spoiler (£250) over yours, which means that the difference between your now modified Cup, & the Trophy is only £1450 extra ... which imho is worth it, if only for the colour.

Why dont you fit the sachs, recaros and spoiler to your car? then you can have a blue trophy for a lot less.

arent the sachs something silly like £350 new from wests now?

Theyre for rich kids and people with over 4,000 posts only. They even have their own forum. Detatched from reality and society iirc. Many owners are failed quantity surveyors and still class microwaving as 'cooking' whilst portraying gangster status from the comfort of their parents 5 bedroom detached.

You're not a true trophy owner though Dave. You're a serial purchaser and thus your trophy experience is just what parents call a 'phase'. One that will pass on its own and one day you'll look back and joke about the fact you owned one.

I still read your saxo track blog to this day (and take reference from it) and I feel I know you enough to comment - (with much certainty) that you will own your trophy for another 4.2 months and then rid yourself of the bile that attaches itself to the status of being a trophy owner, with haste.

That is all.

Ha ha, for my daily car i'd tend to agree, i do go through phases, probably about 8 per year in fact ;)

But for me the Trophy is a bit like Herpes, once you've had it, it never quite goes away. Even when you think its gone, its just hiding somewhere else, waiting to re-appear when its not expected. Trophyitus is a disease that ive had for the past 2 years now. Dont think ill get rid for a while either.

  172 Cup
I own a very good example of a cup and around a year ago my brother sold his trophy (which was a stone cold minter with 21k on) that he owned for just over a year, so I know about what both are capable of. What I would say is that yes trophys are epic cars and are undeniably the pick of the 1*2 bunch.

They look epic and the way they drive is fantastic. If I hadn't owned a 1*2 in the past then I would defo recommend a trophy. However would I consider it much of an upgrade from my/a cup? Not really. Certainly not for a car driven on the road. I would keep your cash and save more to upgrade to something like a 200, r26 etc. All IMO of course.

Personally, i wouldnt call that an upgrade, more of a sideways step, the 200 is more 'modern' so imho offers more grip, but less delicacy, & the R26 is just a sledgehammer, more grip, less finesse, more speed.

For me, an upgrade to a 1*2 is an Elise.

Oh I do love a good stereotyping that bears no resemblance to, well anything actually. And btw the CT forum was set up by NIK who iirc is also pretty instrumental here. I think you'll find that almost all Trophy owners have their roots in hot french hatches and think comments like this are hilarious.

You might have missed the pi55 taking and jovial nature of my post(s). They do mean absolutely nothing 99.9% of the time.

And FYI I'm not homophobic.
Many of my mates drive trophys.

MSTRBKR,

If you're getting itchy feet from one of the most favoured Clio's, will another clio really make a difference?

Try out some other options, maybe you could scratch the itch with something rear-drive,for instance.

I think the trophy is a car for some one that 100% wants one....otherwise why spend twice as much as a car that 80% the same (although I know the other 20% makes a difference).

I'd love a trophy, (for one to see what all the fuss is about) but I've had a cliosport already (172) so I'm off to scratch other motoring itches instead.

I think you appreciate the Trophy (like most of us), and would love to own one but you are trying to justify to yourself spending all that extra for a similar car. How much do you really want one?

If I was you I'd either spend a little money on the car that you already have or buy something different.

Ahhh exactly, I've been looking at 350Zs, S2000s and Z4 Coupés over the past couple of months. I'm saving up quite a bit of money and leaning towards the Z4. Then last night I saw a minter Trophy for £5000 and started to consider it.

I thought the same though, I'm not sure a Trophy would be a whole lot different to my Cup. Likewise I'm not that interested in getting a 200, as nice as it is.

If it was my £5k and I didn't need practicality, it'd be an MX-5.

Cheap as a Clio to run (if not less) and you don't have to be doing license-losing speeds to "bring it alive" / " push the envelope" / Other such Evo-esque comments.

Get out there and try a couple of your suggestions out though, that's the only way to discover if you'll like them.

Good luck

He is right there. Once you own one its seriously hard to up grade to something as good. Exige s or FRP only 2 cars that come to mind

Good point, buy Gally's FRP, you wont find a better one and ithey're far moer special than a tricked-up Clio..... in my view anyway.

Oh, and you wont have to pay 1/4 the worth of the vehicle to get the belts done.

Its not really that expensive if going to specialist is it not.

If your prepared to own such a special car, then you have got to prepared to spend the cash.

Might I add the trophy is number 7 in the evo top 100 drivers cars to

I'd still rather the exclusivity and now rock-solid value of an FRP over the Trophy, but that's only my view. Both are special, limited editions, but the FRP feels more special.

Evo can say whatever they like too, it's not as if 99% of the populous get to drive these cars in the way they like to write about.

I'm not knocking the Trophy, they're great cars and I'm sure they deserve a lot of the praise, but there are better cars on the market, especially when comparing them with a 172 cup, such as we are in this thread.

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
Not that interested in an FRP either, but owning an Elise would be a 'box ticked' moment definitely. One for the future as S2s are still over £10k.

A few suggestions of just looking after the Cup and keeping it; this has been the plan for some time and I've been doing a lot of maintenance lately to do this. But there comes a point where wheel refurbs, bumper resprays and dent removal are just pointless on a car worth less than £2k - so I'll leave all that and keep it healthy underneath :)

It'd be nice to have a Trophy but probably not a wise move considering the £3000 outlay and the fact I already have a decent 172!

Good condition Z4 3.0 Roadsters are dropping under £7k... 6 cylinders would be a nice change.

  PH1 V6
I have driven both, and owned a 172 cup previously. The Trophy is a better car, purely because of the upgrades fitted as standard. It feels "special" and mainly because its a limited edition car. I really liked the Trophy i drove.... loved the seats, suspension and colour etc.... but im not sure i could pay 3k+ to part with a cup (not when you already own one).

I would consider upgrading the cup, but then if you are going to spend serious sums then just buy a Trophy because then you know you have the "top dog" as standard, so to speak.

Try something else, if you dont like it, then come back and buy yourself a trophy.

A lot of the people on this forum have sold their clio's, realised they're probably the best car out there for the money and came back to them.

As for driving experiences....my old trophy would cover a back road quicker than my brothers evo :)

  225 Cup & Williams
I've recently bought a trophy straight after owning a very well setup ph1. Yeah it is an awesome handling little car but for me I regret not going for something different it's just not that much better over a cup, ph1 or whatever rs Clio IMO.

MY original rational for buying one :)

Elise , nice to have for a bit but you soon realise they are compromised , exige S nice ,good track car but then for the money a caterham is much better , M3 ..unless its the new V8 they are ok but nothing great really , RS4 nice noise but a heavy barge that can be a handful , 911 ....no such thing as a cheap one , FPR ..... err ok limited edition but its only a 150bhp puma with a bodykit really ??? .

You see it all depends what you have had are used to ,and what you want them for ..... if i wanted a car to surprise thats great value for money then i would suggest a VX220 turbo , fantastic value for what it is .

but then we are lucky enough to have lived with all of the above so have had and moved on ....

in an idea world , for track it would be a caterham , you'll never beat the smiles per pound and cheap ontrack running costs for the performance , for the road a V8 vantage and keep a 172 cup for running about in ....

as for buying a trophy over a 172 cup , i can see the appeal , buy what you want , not what everyone else thinks you should , as the only person who knows is you ........ i had years of people saying the elise was the best thing since sliced bread and a true supercar , its not , its a compromised poorly built light sports car with a metro engine in (before looking at the later yota powered cars ) .... everyone has a different view and they are rarely unbiased .....
but hey i like big diesel cars ,and for getting from a to b nothing beats something like an e320 merc with the best auto box in the world ..............
