Head Porting mirror finish exhaust port

  Volvo S60 T5

Decided to port my cyclinder head myself.

Have a set of carbide tip cutters for the job, worked wonders, have got the ports to a decent size. Takes about 2-3hrs to shape the ports(each one) and keep them nice and even.

Working on the theory of highly polished exhaust ports and rough inlet ports.

What I would like to know is what is the best thing to use to get a mirror finish on the inlet ports, have tried very fine wet/dry but its not as shiny as I had hoped for.

Anyone got any ideas

Ile post some pics up later on:D

Nice going!

The ports dont actually need to be any bigger though, its the shape your going for. And about 50% of your flow gain will come from the proper valve seat configuration. Dont forget to replace your guides aswell as i assume youve ground these down.

As for mirror finishing, dont bother. Within 1 min of running its coated in a layer of carbon anyway. You need a rough satin finish in the chamber and in the exhaust to prevent hot spots. A mirror finish will result in the carbon not sticking evenly, leading to patches. And a fine layer of carbon is needed for efficient combustion.

And dont forget, in a turbo engine the correct chamber shape is top of your list. Itll determin how much boost/ignition timing/fueling you can run on street octane levels. And the chamber conssits of the Head which is the roof, and the piston which is the floor, most people ignore the piston.

Good luck!

Get the pics up and well have a gander and see if i cant point any bits out that should be touched and not touched etc etc.

tip.

You can usually get better port picks by turning the flash off and shining a really bright lamp into the ports from the chamber side, ala my sig.

Dont forget, the seat job is 50% of the flow though!
