Heavy heavy scoring on both discs after a track day

Hey, did knockhill yesterday and killed the brakes nicely, now I'm not fussed about it all, was fully expecting to be buying at the very least pads but I'm curious as to why the discs now look like this?

Gonna guess overheating but also keen to learn!

The pads and discs are just your standard mintex stuff from my local motor factors, I will upgrade to better for the next one but these did pretty well all things considered!

Cheers

I scored my Brembo H/C's with DS2500 pads at Snetterton last month but not like that! Mine has worn off now but I put it down to my brakes overheating slightly as I never had any cooling ducts going to them. I now have ready for the Nurburgring next month

Pads have two states if you will, a molecular and an abrasive state. When the pads are cold they are abrasive, so they physically scrub the discs to slow you down. When the pads are super hot they break down to a molecular level and literally glue themselves to the discs to slow you down, they grip the discs.

I presume you have metallic brake pads, they're typically made of iron, copper, steel and graphite all mixed together and bonded to form the pad material. They will be very coarse against the discs, and an older set of discs will wear down quickly having that sort of pressure applied to them repeatedly.

A set of harder race pads more suited to the application, with a higher temp compound will keep the disc wear down. Because when up to temp the bonding material in the compound will be doing the work...Not the metal particles in the compound.

*edit* This is a good read -

Great thanks for that, yeah, pretty basic pads, not the cheapest of the cheap but just oem spec, the discs and pads are 1500-2000 miles old! As I say not fussed and will just write it off as a trackday expense but it's defo my priority for the next one. And yes, I did get them very hot! Knockhill has 100-30 stop followed by 105-80 stop not very long after!

I'm hoping to do at least 3 a year, I'm tempted to stick with the cheaper stuff for daily use and swap to better for trackdays, whilst I have had fade out on the road before its becoming a much rarer occurance the older I get! And for the sake of half a hours work swapping them over it would mean having better brakes for each situation. Good link btw, halfway through reading it!

I've only used 2500's in A3 track cars, and they were very good for road. Never got any real fade, and good initial bite.

HOWEVER, not comparable to Hawks or CL's in any way. Once you've had track pads, or a race specific compound (none of this EBC s**t) you won't go back. It is
just a whole different playing field.

What tyres do you run? You get muppets who say "yeah but I can lock the wheels up on OE pads, so why do I need super duper pads. Why not buy better tyres!" but the two go hand in hand.

Worth noting that the easiest and most efficient way to warm up slicks is through braking, if using slicks or R888's and that sort of things you would need a set of race or track specific pads...Because by the time you have warmed the tyres up you'll have cooked the brakes lol

I must emphasise that this is very much a daily driver that will do sub 250 track miles this year so not going all out, just want to know that I'll stop when I need too! I'll be using pe2s for the foreseeable, I have a set with under 2mm on them that I used yesterday which I've yet to remeasure them to see how much of the tread i used up. I think because they are so low on tread I didn't have the tread block peeling problem many talk about, although I clearly used up some of the outer sidewall on the fronts! Tbh as good as 888s no doubt are I'm out for fun, not laptimes so huge grip, last of the late breakers, pushing the absolute limit aren't what it's about for me. Although it would be fair to see I do press on a bit!

Cheers for the help btw jardo, been useful and plenty food for thought

No problems dude :)

Just enjoy it and have fun, the idea of a different set of pads for track work is a good one. But I would reccomend keeping a spare set of discs AND pads just incase you badly crack or warp the discs on track.

Good luck :)

I have a slight score ring in the centre area of my Brembo max discs, I'm using CLrc5+ pads

Is it something I should be worried about? Pretty much brand new as well

You will get light scoring and wear, chances are a stone or piece of gravel trap cought up in the pad. They SHOULD in a perfect world wear evenly, not the end of the world of they don't. From what the OP has that is IMO serious wear, one light ring is no real issue.
