Hi,

Long time lurker first time poster. I've made a rash decision and decided to buy a cheap 172 unseen on eBay. Everything points towards it being a lemon... 15 years old with 15 owners, 110,000 miles, limited service history, dodgy MOT gaps etc. But I've bought it anyway! Going to pick it up Saturday and just wondered if anyone knew it? It has cliosport.net stickers in it so one of the many owners was a member.

The reg is HN02ONC but at one point was on a private plate S21JJN

Any info or horror stories appreciated!

The last 3 MOT's have been clean which is the only bonus. Parts are so plentiful and so cheap I'm not too concerned. Worst case scenario I can break it for parts and break even.

The belts on these are one of the most important things to check on the paperwork as you’ll be looking at over £500 to get them done by a decent specialist.

Also if it has limited service history it is well worth doing a service yourself on it as it could’ve been a while since its last one.

Yep. Apparently the belts were done last year but theres no paperwork so I'm going to give it a full service and work over and take it to The Clioman probably for belts and dephaser etc.

I see it as a bit of a Lego car. Parts are so plentiful and cheap that whatever breaks or falls off I can just replace easily enough anyway.

Belts have always been done apparently. Just like most have been cammed or remapped. No paperwork though ?

Yeah they’re not too bad to work on so you can get a lot done for little money

Lol, truth! And don't forget the ones with the engine replacement from a 182 Trophy on 55k.. with no paperwork!

Ah I’m yet to buy one of those but I certainly would as that would give me a low mileage example with 182 bhp! Shame the paperwork went walkabout though

Right....assuming it's not a complete minger, Full service, belts to be done at Clioman or Ren7oaks. Full clean and valet. Cooksport springs, cup dampers, spacers etc. Any other important bits to check it essential mods? Purely road use at the moment.

Personally I think you've done pretty well for yourself, especially considering it only cost £900. If you're handy with a spanner, it shouldn't be too difficult repairing the odd fault yourself, and if (worst case scenario), the cambelt was to snap, I'm sure you would see some fairly decent returns breaking it for parts. It might be worth removing the cambelt cover and having a quick look to get an indication of belt condition. If the belt material is cracking, it's probably a good time to prioritise a belt change. You never know, the previous owner might actually have a shred of integrity in saying the belts were changed.

When my previous vehicle went bang, I ended up spending £700 on a 1.25 Ford Fiesta as a stopgap, I would've much preferred to pay a small premium for a 172, which would've been a hoot around the Cornish coastal roads, regardless of service history!

I often find that cheap clips are cheap for a reason. It’s a cliche but I find it better to buy a car from members on here.

Saying that, I bought a clio from a member on here and it turned out to be a cat d - he obviously didn’t know that when he sold it though - honest.
