Hello!

  182, Q7, Focus, XFR
:)

I'm a member over on Meganesport, and own a 225 Cup. Love it.

Thing is, my wife is after a car and guess what she's decided. Yep - a RenaultSport Clio!

So, popped over here to get guidance and advice before settling on what to get and how much to spend. Initial thoughts are it'll be a Blue phase 2 172 with as few miles as possible.

If there is a welcome area and I missed it, or user/buing guides or recommendation threads, sorry and let me know where! Guess my first question is what expensive maintenence jobs (i.e. cambelt) are going to need doing and when..

I'll be a signed up member when she's decided that's def what she wants, and I'm already going to the FCS (and the track :D ) with the Meggy.

Cambelt = 70k or 5 Years and costs anywhere between 500 and 900 quid.

Blue options = Monaco, Petrol, Mondial (only in cup spec) and one other but I can't think now.

Hiya MrTurner, welcome to CS. :)

Dunc (my Hubby) has a 2.0ltr 16V Megane Coupe at the moment. He's looking to buy an R26 but finding a local garage for a test drive is proving to be a little difficult. It appears we will have to wait for about 6 weeks for a test drive. :(

As for your Mrs wanting a 172, it's a darn good choice if you ask me. The only problem I would have would be choosing between a ph1 and a ph2. I think any kind of blue is a pretty good colour choice too. Good luck with finding a nice one and please do put pics up when/ if you get one. ;)

Hello Mr Turner, spoken to you on Gti6/Megane forums i couldn't get the money together for a 225, so i got the next best thing!

Is the 182 out of your price range?

Welcome to CS.

Depending on what your Mrs wants from the car, you have the choice of the Full Fat 172 (air con, leather/alcantara, xenons all all the comfy bits) or the Cup which has none of the above but is a bit more focused towards the driving thrills, but thats not to say the Full Fat isn't capable.

As said already, the cambelt is due now on most of the 2002 models and prices can vary. Renault will charge the earth as you may already know whereas the likes of Rentech, Yozzasport and Mark Fish will ask for less but with no less professionalism....maybe even more so.

Other things to consider will be the exhaust from the centre section back, that is prone to basically rusting and falling off so keep an eye out for that.
Replacing it with a decent stainless steel system is cheaper than replacing it with new OE parts....and it won't happen again either!

Other than that just look for a full service history or loads of receipts and you should be pretty sound.
They do have other niggles but all are pretty easy and cheap to resolve if you know what you are doing and speak to the right people!

Edde, Fred and Yozza (Yozzasport), and Mike (Rentech) are all very good at answering most queries regarding the car.

you could get a nice mk2 ph2 172 for about 6k imo , good luck mate .
what parts of the mids do you come from ?

Thanks all for the posts - rapid moving forum or what! Cheers for the detail Ollie - will def be looking for receipts and that cambelt then. I bet there are loads out there who think that because their car has done 40k it don't need the cambelt until 70k..

Blue options = Monaco, Petrol, Mondial (only in cup spec) and one other but I can't think now.
In terms of style - the Cup is her perference already.. Is the Cup only in Blue? And can you get FF+Cup like you can on the meggy?

Any pics of your motor?

Get over to www.meganesport.net if you've not already. People will be able to advise where cars are for a drive (I saw a mecury R26 at Sunwin Derby the other week), or, twist someones arm, they may let you have a go..

Ey up Leon! I recall mate - we seem to have a very similar style of motor  182 could maybe get too, but would prefer to get a minter of a 172. Budget is going to be around £4-5k. Seen a few for £5k, and a couple of cups around £5-£5.5k - some haggling to be done :D

Central Derby bud

Cups - silver or Mondial Blue.

You mean FF's with cup packs... these can be had on 182s but not on 172s.

Cups are cheaper than FF's and you should be able to pick up a standard 52 plate cup with say 30k on the clock for around 5500 privately.

FF's have Xenons, leather + alacantra seats, a slightly softer ride, no splitter and dynamique style spoiler, 5 spoke alloys as opposed to turinis, Aircon (having said that some later cups do have A/C), no cruise control and come in more colours.

They will be a little more expensive than cups though (typically 20%).
