HELP!!!! 182 LADY IN NEED OF ADVICE.....CAM NOISE!!!!!

  Clio 182
Hi i have a 182 that in the last days i have noticed noise from the middle of the engine were cams sit,,,,Does drive fine and no other issues,,

I have taken to a clio specialist today who seems to think that i have scored the head, due to oil blockage and possibly starved the cam for a split second of oil.....
he also said that it could be the bearing in the power steering pump.... he said he would like to oil pressure the car, and taking the assumption that the pressure is down to then proceed to run the car without aux belt see if noise still there and if so continue to remove head and investigate the cams, if scoring seems to be the issue then to weld and skim the cam seating.....
although im desperate to get the car fixed im at stand still with what to do and this obviously is the only opinion i have as yet, not happy the thought of having welded or skimmed would the car be ok or would that fail eventually????

im thinking maybe new engine? or has anyone had this done b4 and has been ok??? i dnt mind spending the money if it going to be a deffo fix or few thousand mile going to be in same boat???

opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated as im going mad and honestly do not know no what to do for the best!!!!

thanks Kelly x

I thought I had cam damage or head damage but after some help on here it seems to be an incorrectly tensioned cam belt tensioner, which makes a clicking clacking sound on idle.

It could be something to do with the cam belt or dephaser as above. the noise seems to travel if it is that area and make it sound like something else in some cases.

They came in today Dan ;-)

A possible tensioner issue was also mentioned but honestly, sounds like head/cams scored.

Yep no harm in a second opinion but you really don't need to!! Mick knows his stuff and won't lead you up the garden path.

There's another French Specialist place in Derby near Bristol Street... dunno what they're called but I remember diagnosing a timing issue once and the customer went to them for a 2nd opinion (this was on a Megane not a Clio). This place told them I was wrong and all it needed was a camahaft sensor so I got slagged off... two weeks later it still wasn't right but ended up back in my workshop (having the timing corrected).

Car went mint afterwards.

In my professional opinion . .

If a top professional like diamond motors gives you a diagnosis just take what he says.

Mick and diamond dont have a immaculate reputation for nothing.

I'd trust Mick implicitly, but that said EVERYONE makes a mistake at some point, so on that basis I guess it makes sense to go elsewhere for a 2nd opinion, you could try Fred@BTM, going to be a long drive though.

I forgot about them, yep another good place to try but its gonna need a decision ultimately to pull it down for inspection which is going to cost money.

Inspecting the cam journals is going to mean a new aux kit and timing belt kit and a resealing of the upper covers as there's no way I'd re-fit the current units.

Hi would just like to add this is the first time ive ever had to use a specialist to diagnose an issue with my car, I do not think for a minute that im being lead up a garden path or being ripped off in the slightest. Obviously you have background on Mick at diamond and I didn't I met the guy once after finding him online and on the off chance went straight over, but after all your lovely feedback on him I now know him abit better lol.. As for inspection of journals etc and replacement of parts we did discuss this and I am more than happy to pay for the car to be repaired and like I said I will be in touch lol... you men need to remember im a woman I worry and I stress particually when my car poorly!!!! Will also add that mick was very pleasant and helpful and more than accommodating that day, where as other mechanics in the past do not take the time to explain in detail and mick was more than happy to do so. will be in touch this week mick ;)

If you get a second opinion and its different? You will be looking for a 3rd opinion! Lol. So lets hope the 2nd man says same as the first man :)

But good luck sorting your car :D

I don't know Martin as she had it done elsewhere. I guess she assumed I was only going to replace the camshafts so went everywhere to get it done without telling me then just emailed me at 3.45 the day before saying it was fixed and wasn't coming in now.

I guess it's my own fault for saying it could have been the water pump, PAS pump or the camshafts hence me needing to pull it to bits to see.

I think this thread might be about to turn silly.

IMO no-ones done anything horrendously wrong or lost out massively here? I'm sure Mick would have appreciated a bit more notice of a cancellation, society would have liked the customer to stick with one good tradesman to build/reward trust in each other but on the other hand maybe the customer just felt more reassured by a more "sure" sounding diagnoses.

Incredibly annoying I appreciate, but in the bigger picture Mick's acted in his & the customer's best interest. It's just a shame that he's lost out on some work on this occasion, but I guess traders will appreciate far more than the general public that you win some you lose some.

No issues from this end, not gonna start bitching as its sometimes the way things go but if i'd have known she was going about the garages I probably wouldn't have made such an effort looking in to it let alone divulge any information... you win some and others you lose.
