Help - Cambelt failure!!

not had one fail, but ive been in the motor trade for 20 years,
quick price up

Head Set £130
Cam belt kit £160
Aux belt kit £130
16 valves @ £15p/v £240
Cam plugs £ 10
Labour 10hrs @£30 £300

= £970 if done at a independent garage

as long as there is no damage to the pistons or head this is roughly what it will cost

imo 2nd hand engine - £600 - £800 depending on mileage,
then you have to fit a cambelt x aux belt whilst the engine is out.
plus fitting ?

very expensive either way,
or sell car for spares or repair ?

Just got my car back, cost £1070 all in inc both belts. All 16 valves were bent and it wrecked all the value guides on the exhaust side and a couple on the inlet side. What actually caused the fail was the acc belt, the bracket for the tensioner has snapped clean in half which over time had caused the acc belt to move of the pulleys enough to wreck the cambelt.

Does anyone know if this braket is a part that should be replaced or is it supposedly a non-comsumble product?

the tensioner itself is a consumable. Increasingly common to see them seized or to break when attempting to de-tension. Get a complete aux kit which comes with the lower idler also

The lot has been replaced now, i know the tensioner is but its the metal bracket that has actually broken.

i think you're confusing the parts, there's a fairly chunky piece of aluminium that is part of the tensioner. you can get new pulleys to go on this, but a genuine tensioner kit includes everything

Thats the info I was after, if the alu part is included in a tensioner kit or not. Its the alu part on my old one was that has snapped in half. Starting to wonder if renualt replaced it when the acc belt was replaced at 36k.
