Help! Just killed my car..

Help! Just killed my car!!

Oh god..

I was pushing my headunit in after many attempts of moving wires to make room when I heard a click, followed by my interior light and immobiliser led going out.

All my electrics are dead.. can't lock it or anything!

What have I done?

Very worried.... :(

I'm hoping it's just a fuse. Is this likely? Argh it better be!

VERY worried. This has now stopped me in my tracks installing the ICE... Lost all confidence to touch electrics! :(

Check the fuse to see if it's blown, it's likely to be that. Take the HU out again & look at the wires etc too.

What fuse will it be? Can I take them all out at once to check or will I need to grab a torch? Headunit is inside along with my new speakers. :(

take out each fuse one at a time, you dont wanna forget which goes where!take radio out,if cables arent frazzled then its just a fuse

youd have seen smoke if youd done anything more than blow a fuse

I get a torch, shine it on each fuse and look carefully to see if its broken, if unsure take it out. Youve probably skinned some wires by pushing the headunit in and blown a fuse.

Off I go. Thanks guys!

Edit - They're a b*tch to get out... how do you get the small ones out?

Thanks lemonobby1.. That made it a bit easier! lol

It's the (only) 5A fuse in there... diagram shows central locking or something.

Do I just replace it or will I need to disconnect battery or anything?

Sorry if that's a really stupid question... As you can tell I've never done this before. :p

Just replace it, but as I said take out your hu & look at the wires as otherwise it will probably do it again.

Thanks I'll do it now. Sigh of relief!!

Edit - All good now. Phew! Thanks everyone, really appreciate it. All wires inside car seem ok.. going to check all on headunit now.

Can lock this now? :)

It happened again!

This time it was right as the headunit locked into place. Same fuse. Off to halfrauds I go as that's my last spare gone.

All wires appear to be fine - nothing stripped. Argh really annoying.

I once forced a headunit into my mates Metro GTI using both my feet.

He had to call the fire brigade when it caught fire. :(

feet are a usefull tool when installing head units,

clios are very bad for it, its that stupid bit of plastic at the back.

LMAO... this has never happened to me thankfully... just made sure all the wires were as far down the back as they could go and gently eased the headunit til it clicked into the cage. Job done.

When I first got mine I had 4 foot of wire stuck down the back because of the Nokia handsfree kit that this guy had installed. Took it out in the end. Bluetooth FTW

worst was my DVD player that had half the central grid coming out of the back

OMG!!

I had a TV headunit in an Audi that I had and i took it out to check a fuse and i nearly cried.....

I thought spaghetti bolognese was pouring out my dashboard!!!

I f**king hate wires.

i know it seems daft but a friend of mine put my HU in, he thread'd a bit of strong string down the back so he could pull the wires out the way while pushing the HU in. I know most people just be careful to move them out the way and push the HU in but well there ya go...

Might have to try it tbh.

Are you serious? lol

Now I really don't want to... :p

if you have small hands you can get your hands in round the back,

All my my finger are sore from pushing cable under things and a couple of my knuckles are raw from forcing my hand under the carpet (which is like sandpaper!!) to grab cable. I don't feel like shoving my hand in there. :p

Good news though! I think I just found the culprit (And I also have two more 5A fuses. Had to buy a pack of 5 assorted fuses to get the single one I wanted though >.<).

Electrical tape that up, and make sure its pushed right to the back lol.

Ive got big fuse boxes and bluetooth wires on the back of my pioneer, right pain in the ass tbh, but i just pushed them right down the back.. seems to be loads of room.

Feel sorry that youve had a bad experience in installing, It can put you off.. But dont let it ! just be carefull and go slow.

you should be able to push them out the way to the left at the back, i got alsorts down there for mine, stalk adaptor, numourous speaker cables (crossover's) it will fit just gotta be careful

  Ph1 172 + Combo van
when i installed mine i found it easier if you take the cage out and then get all the wires as shout as possible and push all of the excess down behind the heater controls. then put the cage back in and it will go in nicely.

Turns out there were two wires like it which makes more sense as the two were touching each other. Covered these up with electrical tape then my brother jumps in the car and decides to tape it all up. :D

It's now all back in and working. Thanks for all the help guys.
