Help With Interior Mods

R

rich[182]

Getting 172 (not cup) in 2 wks, considering the following

Richbrook Gear Knob

Richbrook Handbrake Handle Cover

Richbrook Gaiter Surround

Lockwood Dial-Kit

Has anyone any experience of fitting any of the above and can they be removed without having MARKED the interior trim, ie with the gaiter surround is it a self stick process rather than screws

Dialkit - Do I have to remove needles or do any cutting

I replaced the gearknob in myt Mk1 172 because I thought the bulbous silver standard one was gay. It was a bit of a git because it needed to be ripped off with grips (glued in place not screwed).

Once its off its easy to fit the new one with the grubb screw/thread provided. Doubt you will be able to keep the old one though.

If you find out about the handbrake let me know. I dont like the standard plastic one. It looks gay....

Does the handbrake in an 04 Dynamique have to be cut or something?

I got myself a momo pit-stop cover but it won't fit over the original sleeve :S

Handbrake has to be hack sawed off as well. I also used a flat end screw driver to lever the rubber off. Took me 15 mins for handbrake, took me 3 quarters of an hour to saw off the gearnob.

I already have an aftermarket gearknob so the Reno one is long gone - yes it was a hack of a job to get it off lol

Do I just cut the plastic handle part of the handbrake or what?

^ ^ Only cut the rubber skin right down to the metal shaft. Do not cut the button that you push. The best thing to do is cut it lengh ways and keep sawing it until you hear it and feel it get to the metal shaft. Then cut the top of the handbrake width ways, again down the the metal shaft. Once you done that, the handbrake grip should feel a bit loose, just get a flat end screw driver to lever it off the metal shaft. Then the rest of the job should be a doddle.

What you should end up with is a very skinny metal rod with a small gap in the middle so you can see the handbrake arm run down it. (If I can remember correctly). You will also find there is an exposed screw under the metal shaft too - Once you get your new handbrake just stick it over the metal shaft and leave about half and inch of space so you can depress the handbrake button. Obv make sure the button doesn't catch or it will be a nightmare to release the handbrake - as I found out!!!!

the richbrook gaiter surround needs to be screwed on, you get a drill bit with it so you can drill the correct sized hole, but the screws they give you aren't pointed so they're a b*****d to get into the hole you drill, took me an hour and a half to fit mine, and there's only 8-9 screws!!!

looks good when it's done tho ;)

You need a hacksaw and a bag to catch all the plastic sh*t that flies off it.

Before you do anything, take off the gear nob gear direction cap that is on the top of the gear nob (you know, the bit that says 1-2-3-4-5-R), that is simple .. you can just take it off with your fingers.

Now the fun..

Saw it vertically untill you are right down to the white plastic skelton. You will need to stop and keep checking to see how far down you have gone - that is important! Once you have got down to that stop sawing and use a flat end screwdriver to make it a bit loose.. It's not over yet. The plastic skin is quite tough, so you will need to keep sawing it - I would suggest you saw it horizontally now, again stop when you see it is down to the plastic skeleton. Every now and then keep trying to make it looser with the screw driver. Now saw the other side of the gearnob vertically and repeat the process above.

By this point the plastic cover should be in peices or just fall off in your hand which will expose the ivory white 'skeleton' under it.

I hope you have muscles...

Repeat the process above with the saw, but obv you dont need to cut anything else off, other then this white skeleton. This is a very hard plastic and not easy to get off, you will need to go at it quite alot! I would recommend you cut the white bit in lots of places, and keep attacking it with the flat ended screw driver.. Then after about a good 40 mins sawing, it should be in peices and all you should have left it just a round metal shaft.

Warnings:

*DO NOT cut the metal gear shaft!
*DO NOT attempt to cut the reverse gear lever on the metal shaft (the bit you pull up with your fingers when going into reverse)

Jobs a good'un.. Now stick your new nob on :D

Ok cheers for the tips - I'll give the handbrake a go some of these fine days :)
should be as much fun as the gearknob - like putting it through a cheese grater lol
