Hi folks, hope you can help?!

Evening all,

Used a number of forums in the last few years regarding car lark and am hoping you're all just as helpful

Will potentially be buying a 180,000 mile 2004 1.5dCi for £200 as a run around for my girlfriend, the mileage is mad but the cars from my work and well looked after. My girlfriend's always wanted a Clio and this one's at the right price!

But one problem - the turbo has packed up, I think it's the 68bhp version, and really I'm wondering how easy/difficult it is to replace the turbo?

If anyone can point me in the right direction of a walkthrough guide that'd be ace, alternatively any advice would be great

Welcome to the forums unfortunately I no nothing about the turbo but its a diesel the mileage will be fine. I can also tell you one thing someone will be along to help you shortly don't worry about that! lol

Turbos are pretty much a bolt on/off item ... where are you based ?

Haha cheers, it's well serviced and passed mot's every time so I can glance over the mileage hope someone does help soon, got to let our MD know pronto pronto if I want it or not. Potentially had a different car lined up for my girlfriend - a 16 year old Fiesta, rusty but 'solid', but given the choice Fiesta / Clio I know which most sane people would choose.

I'm in Fleet in Hampshire, if it's straight forward I'd do it myself, don't mind getting my hands dirty at all. I guess I'd just need the turbo? No other attachments? Will have to source one, also assume I have to get a 68bhp specific turbo yes? I heard the 80bhp one is basically the same?

If the turbo is spent, providing the engine hasn't eaten the impellor, it should just be an off/on job.

No idea on the details TBH.

literally can't find anything, might even have to buy a dreaded haynes manual

all i really need is some manner of diagram of the turbo system and i'll be sorted (hopefully haha) found one for a TT when i had one and it proved a great help but no luck finding one for this Clio! :S

Just a word of warning... changing the Turbo on a K9K isn't as easy as it first appears. It can be done but be prepared for some scuffed knuckles and loads of swearing.

Thanks Mick, i'll make sure i learn more swear words so i don't run out before i'm finished then haha, fortunately i'm used to working on my brothers mini so reaching in to tiny spaces and grazing knuckles has become second nature

Evening folks,

Have now got the car home, my Dad had an interesting drive back, and i have driven it since.

One big question: how would a diesel with a knackered turbo actually feel?

The car lacks power, makes a nasty vibrating sound at 1500rpm and thats when smoke all comes out the back (everything inside all works a treat) so does that sound about right for just a seized turbo yes/no?

If it's much more than that i'll have to think more thoroughly about what to do.

The car didn't overheat and generally ran fine aside from the above

Yep sounds like turbo failure for sure. Specialist Renault Breakers knock new replacements out for £400, its an awkward job but not difficult. Check for play in the turbo shaft if you want to be 100% before ripping it all apart.
