Hi.


I finish GCSE's next summer and plan to go on the Renault apprenticeship scheme. However in the 2 Months that I am off school i need something to do. I want to create a monster, joke. I want to make a 172 replica from a 1.2 16v. Havent got the car yet. Once its done, I will either sell it or keep it for another year until I can drive.

Planned Mods:

- Xenon's
- 172 Body Kit (Inc. Grille)
- Lowered. (Not sure, by how much I'm thinking 35mm)
- Cup Alloys (Anthracite)
- PH1 or PH2 sport interior.
- Possible upgrade to the Sat Nav if it can be retro fitted.

Colour:

- I wan't a liquid yellow 182 but unfortunately they never made a Liquid yellow 1.2 16v
- Flame Red?

Hello Noah.

What you're asking is a hugely popular debate, if you'd like some inspriration, use the search bar (to the right, far right, of gallery) for "rep" or "replica" etc.

As much as it sounds like you'd enjoy the project please remember to consider a couple of things.

1) You'll spend more on modifications than the car itself, and at the end, short of breaking for parts, you shouldn't expect to see any of that money back
2) If you're a 1st year driver, expect to get given ridiculous quotes on insurance by the time you've added all these trimmings to it.

To my knowledge, it would be a huge job to retro-fit an in-dash sat-nav, it may work out easier to put a dock in the upper-dash display pod (especially if you choose to change the stereo too, as the majority of stereos will not hook into the dashpod anymore and thus leave it 90% useless).

I notice you haven't mentioned any "performance" upgrades, this is good. Trying to squeeze power out of a 1.2 is a lost casue before you even start, bolting on a "sick" exhaust will be laughable at best and just plain unsociable at worst. For proof, just kick your backbox off and see if you like the sound. If not, you know not to get any special systems.

Good luck with it, as said, this place is full of people who have done what you are planning on, you'll be able to get plenty of tips, hints and advice. There's also a "guides" section if you becoma paid member, costs £12, but could save you a lot of time.

Buy a Valver. Spend 2 months stripping things down, tidying them up and replacing what needs to be done. Come the end you have a car that you would have learnt loads on and still might make you some money.

Thats useless to me. How much is insurance going to be on a 1.8. I'm not trying in particular to make money, but to learn and I have found what with my sister having a clio, that they are fun to work on and easily modified.

Fair enough, but you did say you might just sell it, I assumed you weren't planning on insuring or driving it to be fair. In that case a 1.2 is the way to go, but all you can really do is exterior work because I'd imagine not a lot of work will need doing on it mechanically.

Thanks for the advice. Again I like speed, but if i wanted speed I'd buy a 182. I don't like the idea of loud exhausts and ridiculous dustbins as tail pipes. But its more of a learning experience. Considering the times with petrol being so pricey, I may do this on a diesel and give it too my dad to replace his supercharged mercedes.

You'd be correct in saying that. But as I plan to do an apprenticeship it's not entirely important, i can do basic work, but I'm not going out of my way to buy a non-runner or A CAT D or CAT C right off

Im 15 and on a budget. I am not sponsored by mummy and daddy, so I am not going mental on this.

Plus considering i'm not a fan or red, unless its Flame red. If i wanted to make a trophy rep, i would be spending thousands on the interior, alloys and paint! lol

I have come to my real conclusion. I don't think I'm going to make a replica. As that would be slightly pointless but what i would wan't on my Clio:

- 51' Clio Dynamique 1.2 16v or 51-52' Clio Dynamique DCi 80 or 65.
- Colour code the plastic trim.
- Paint the alloys in anthracite grey.
- Save and Buy a Ph1 or Ph2 sport interior.
- RS clio cup spoiler
- Blacked out diamonds
- Full Service.
- Any tips on air filters?
- Clear side repeaters, (If not already on the car)
- Possible (Depending on how much the prices are) Vinyl wrap the body in White and the Roof in black.
- Tint rear windows.
- Colour code dash inserts.
- 3RD Brake light covered with the "clio" stickers that can be bought on Ebay.

any other things i can do? Dont go mental, budget is around £2300.

Mileage on the car has to be under 100k
Any colour but green

Remap it to 125-130bhp 190lb/ft, keep the 172's guessing what you have under the bonnet

I was just saying why waste a load of cash making a 172 rep that will cost you just as much to insure as a valver I expect or sell it and lose a fortune or buy a valver have some real fun and possibly break even! i can't see a full declared 172 rep being much different to a valver....

A wrap will lose a grand of your budget immediately and the interior wont be cheap if you want one that isn't tatty

As above, a lot of your ideas are pretty standard and will probably work out well though. the tinting and brae-light though, dunno....well, it's gonna be your car anyway!

if you just want to learn, and not want to drive....

buy broken 172s on the cheap, break them for parts on here and on ebay,

learn clios like the back of your hand, AND make money!!

id say 70% of my knowledge about cars is from stripping them down for parts or repair!!
theres no point building a car you cant drive imo because it will be just torture to watch it take shape and not enjoy it! (it is for me atm )

and theres the added bonus, that you can take the best few parts from each one you break and when you build one for yourself, you can make it mint!!

I don't think I will get a car at all. It's not so much the car just the insurance. I'm saving as much as possible but with prices like they are I probably wont drive until im 19 or 20.
