How do you know if cambelt needs replacing on 182??

  Clio sport 182
Hi guys, recently bought my 05 182..... Not really good with engines or a anything and I have seen on here that cam belts are a common fault with these cars. So just looking for clues and advice really. Also my car seems to sort of whistle when I hammer it (don't think it's the exhaust) ?? Help would be appreciated!! Thanks

Cambelt isn't a common 'fault' as such. its quite simple really, it needs changing every 72K or every 5 years, whichever comes sooner. Aux belt needs changing every 30K or 5 years. If you dont have any paperwork saying its been done, get it done as a snapped belt nearly always means a new engine!

There's no real physical way of telling..

Do you have a receipt proving it has been carried out?

If not then I would consider taking it to a specialist and having it changed for peace of mind.

It had a timing belt kit and an access belt kit done in 2009 at 36000 miles. It now has 57000. Does it need doing ?

It's not a fault, it's just part of the service schedule.

As above, nearly time for everything to be done.

Due next year, depending on where you are in the country take it to one of the specialists on here. They'll do it properly with the correct timing tools

Where's best specialist place to take it in the north west (Lancashire). Iv heard birch down is good but is there any nearer ?

Birchdown is the nearest and it's where the Manchester and rest of the NW lot tend to go to unless you can be bothered to drive to Fred @ BTM in Birmingham.

birchdown lads know there stuff 110% im from chorley Lancashire, and the drive isn't that long at all, mines been there with them twice, and the best bit is they give you there work van, so you can nip into the villiage or what ever you want to do,

I just took 2 big sleeping bags, flask, radio. and pulled up in a country laybay, and got mi head down till the BG was finish about 2.30ish.

im due there again soon so same again, but this time I might take the rod with me coz I spotted a lovely little pond last time.

they are really good at what they do though.

After getting mine done at a specialist I would say it was well worth the £500. At home we have done everything to cars (built them, put totally different engines in, repair) and pretty much any job that needs doing, but having a look under the Clio's bonnet there really isnt much space to work...engine out job??? Plus the issue with the timing and I didn't want to mess that up.

And after getting it done, the car was a totally different animal. it got even quicker and fuel economy improved.
