How do you stop alloys from pitting?

  K20 EG Hatch
I clean them every week and have never curbed them, they are immaculate other than the fact the break dust on the front seems to pit them and you cant get it out no what! I spend a good hour on just my wheels every sunday without fail! Wash them with hot water and washing up liquid, backs always come up mint but fronts are getting worse!

Waxing them will give it some more protection and make them easier to clean in future.

But know what ya mean about cleaning wheels even worse when ya have 14 spoke things. That have wierd triangles etc in there.

tell me about it, its all the grit they put on the roads that corrodes them

it cant be mate.

my back ones come up like new everytime!
the fronts are starting to pit between the spokes, it has to be break dust!

yeah it must be brake dust, Waxing helps prevent the brakedust from etching into the surface of the wheels (preventing that horrible "pitting")and more importantly makes cleaning them easier the next time round

I find using the old clay once i've done the paint work seems to do a good job.

I use it on the glass as well

Auto glym wheel cleaner is good, but the best I found was the wheel cleaner form the Williams F1 range (not sure if they make it any more) and a clay bar is always useful.

Give them a good wash with a "car shampoo or recommended wheel cleaner" and then get yourself some Meguiar's Gold Class Wax although you may think its expensive it is well worth the money,

Apply it to the body of your car and put a thick layer on your wheels, buff it off with a decent cotton cloth and your break dust wont touch the metal for weeks after, good to give the wheels a rinse off every few days or as and when it aquires a new form of dust.

Also depending on what wheel finish you have i would be careful with some "wheel cleaners" make sure it is safe to use i have in the passed applied some and watched my wheels strip themselves infront of my eyes :)

I put auto glym - tyre seal on mine, seems to help when cleaning. the brake dust comes off really easy. :)

A deent sealant that stands up to heat is what is required, either go for a specialist wheel sealant product or a polymer sealant.

Autoglym Resin and Extra Gloss Protection for me, and wash with normal car soap to avoid stripping the protection when you clean them.

Acid based wheel cleaners will probably make the pitting worse.

  182... again!
Buy mine from market stall...each bottle is about a quid cheaper than halfords!

Wonder Wheels gets rid of most of the pitted stuff but its pretty letal stuff. Try some clay after you've done you're paint. Pity to waste the clay on the wheels.

I use GUNK wheel cleaner and ive never had any problems, its better than the auto-glym wheel cleaner in my opinion.
