cars in general tend to last longer now as the are all zink coated from factory before paint but they will rust eventually. it will just take longer. the other way it will rust is if a repair is carried out but not done properly i.e left in primer for a long period of time, filler getting wet and not fully dried out before primer. this would trap water under the paint and eventually bubble up
We should really think ourselves lucky! Cars these days are nothing like they were some 35 years ago when I started driving. I had two minis that I had to scrap because of chassis rust... probably unheard of now?
Luckily for us, our front arches are plastic. So only the rears to worry about. Just check your car every two weeks or so for exposed metal (chips/scratches etc) and deal with it ASAP if found.
Ive got rust on both back arches of my 98 mk2 If you clean you car regularly I dont think it would rust as bad as mine. The lazy f**k previous owner never cleaned it.
^Blimey! I can see how they could become prone to it though as the rear arches have a bit of a lip on the inside where they seem to collect dirt.
I combat this by taking the wheel off and getting in there with a brush and some snow foam every 2 months or so.
