How tight should the alternator belt be?

just fitted a alternator on my 172 cup but not sure how tight the belt should be? is there a way to test if its to tight or not other than starting it up?

Twist the belt. You should be able to turn it roughly 90 degrees.

That's about the right tension for mine to stop squeaking on start up.

The twist test should always be done on the longest length of the belt also.

yeah i done it from under the car, it was a bit to tight to loosened it up a bit and all is good now.
