how to remove center vent?

Haven't ventured as far as tryign to replace the center vent, the furtherest I've gone is removing the dash to put in new tweeter. My center vent is missing a few (not sure what they are called, little plastic thingys). Beofre I go about breaking anything, does anyone have any experience in taking one out? How is it done? Brute force? Check the picture, red circle is the vent thing I want to replace. I've found a spare so I'll just be swaping the one I have which is missing a few @plastic thingys' with one similar to the one in this pic.

I had to replace two on a customers car and managed to obliterate the ones I took out and badly damaged the new two putting them in.

To summarise: I'm not best qualified to answer this question.
