Iceberg 172 OEM+ Project

  Renault Clio 172
Hey everyone, I posted *most* of this in my hello thread about 4 months ago, about a month after i collected the car, but i thought it was about time i made a project thread as the work is in full swing, ish so i will recap a few things and add the new

I'm Oli, 23 from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, currently living in Leeds

As you can see from my join date I have been a member for a few years, but about 5 months ago I bought myself a nice phase 2 172 so paid my membership and finally got round to making a project thread!

So anyway, the car

K12 ONB (plate came with the car, not my choice, just looks like kn*b to me haha) - This as the case may be, it has kinda grown on me!

The car is originally a 2002 model on an 02 Plate

Iceburg Silver.

65,900 miles when I picked it up, now on 72,221 (i do quite a few miles )

Main Dealer service history upto 38,000 miles, nothing after that, so basically main dealer serviced for its 3 year warrenty period and then not bothered with, poor girl. :dapprove:

Chavvy universal cone filter, stupid rectangle mild steel box section tailpipe welded onto a generic stainless system and a cut rear bumper to suit and all round tints all came on the car when I bought it, this situation is to be soon recitified, more on that later...

All this aside, it cost me a grand total of £1,400 with 6 months tax and 8 months test, having one advisory for the visibly leaking N/S/R shock. :approve:

Overall I was very pleased and the car is amazing, the bodywork is genuinely immaculate with perfect paint and the interior is also excellent condition, with a small bit of wear on one thumb grip. Since originally writing that sentence, some children in my street have scratched my rear bumper because they insist on playing near everyones car and the wear on the thumb grip has got worse :(

So anyway, does anyone know the car?

First job happened on the 21st June, Diamond Motors took care of a full cambelt kit, aux belt kit, dephaser pulley, Waterpump, thermostat, oil and filter change, worrying the car appeared to be on the original belts etc, timing was badly out and the dephaser was knocking like an old tractor but Mick seriously excelled himself, worked nothing other than magic and i would reccomend anybody to go see him. Seriously. :hail:

The drive home was an absolute dream, i LOVED it, totally transformed the car! :race:

I have fitted a Citroen C2 Stubby aerial, which is a great little addition.

Other Notable Issues:-

Weaping N/S Headlamp Washer
Destroyed Exhaust Hangers
Four new tures would be nice, as would an alignment, this will come before the MOT
Tax is due 30/09...£250
MOT is due Novemeber

Mick@DiamondMotors Informed me of a few things, such as my engine mounts were dead and that my oil breather brass 90 bend was broken off so i was spraying my firewall with oil, ouch.

Anyway, I'm sure I have missed pleanty of things but onto the good stuff regardless :boring:

So first I will start with some pictures of the car from today, freshly washed :approve:

IMAG0031_zps9cdc8792.gif

IMAG0032_zpsa0ffee9e.gif

I'm no photographer, but just some quick snaps with the HTC One X

A few photos of some of the nightmare items, such as the horrible exhaust tip

IMAG0030_zps50016801.gif

The poor headlamp condition

IMAG0033_zps2ab2a411.gif

IMAG0034_zps9edce41d.gif

And the weapy headlamp washer stain

IMAG0028_zps85f98624.gif

But i will finish strong! :approve:

This arrived today from Renault

IMAG0025_zpsc29f6cd8.gif

Full set of Clio 172 *Cup* dampers
Oil filter
Sump plug washer
5l Oil
Upper and lower inlet manifold gaskets
Cabin filter
NGK PFR6E-10 plugs

This was bought from hellfrauds to tackle the headlamps

IMAG0035_zpsb26769ee.gif

And i have a nice package winging it's way to me from K-Tec containing: -

Oreca Group N Exhaust
K-Tec Induction Kit
CNC Matched Inlets
K-Tec Engine Mounts (Upper Engine / Upper G/Box and Powerflex Dogbone)
K-Tec Lower G/Box Mount
Eibach Sportline Springs
Whiteline RARB
Powerflex Bushes (Front Wishbone & ARB Kit)

And I think thats it, there may be something ive missed but seen as K-Tec seem to insist on not sending email confirmations, I can't remember :dapprove::rolleyes:

So yeah, I think that just about wraps it up so far,

Thanks for reading :approve:

not a bad way to splash some cash! As said lose the tints, tad too dark imo. Glad your replacing that gash exhaust/tip

  Renault Clio 172
Haha yes mate, my wallet is stinging I must admit. The tints were on the car when I bought it mate, I must admit they have sort of grown on me, and I wouldn't even know where to start to remove them...

Nice base car to start on and looks like you got a few goodies to crack on with too.

That exhaust is shocking lol.

I used 1500, 2000, and finished off with 2500 on my headlights. Would 1200 not be a little rough?

Haha yes that exhaust is the sort of thing that makes baby Jesus cry, god knows what whoever did it was thinking, or what drug they were on haha, at least you havnt had to drive around like that for 6 months

Hopefully not long before the Oreca is here to replace it.

Regards the headlights I just went on the sticky guide found on the forum, I did wonder whether or not to get some 2000 grit though I must admit mate, think you have just convinced me :)

Had a bit of a strange one last night, was driving home and thought "my headlights are a bit dim", got home and realised by drivers side lamp was out. The next thought process was oh they're on auto, maybe ill try manually turning them on, when i turned to sidelights obviously the xenon dipped beams went out, sidelights came on, when put to dipped beam both xenons "ignited" but the drivers side immediately went out again.

Now i instantly thought "Oh no this is going to be the ballast or ignitor" but i tried again this morning and now the drivers side makes no effort to ignite whatsoever, so maybe it is just the bulb? I have done a search on the matter and all i can really deduce from it is that this is a pretty common problem with no real concrete solution.

I ordered some D2S 4300K replacement bulbs from http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/ this morning so hopefully this solves it.

Any ideas if it doesn't? Just swap parts from the passenger side and see if i can find if it is the ballast or ignitor at fault?

In more upbeat news I was in touch with K-Tec this afternoon and hopefully my big parcel should be arriving late this week

  Renault Clio 172
My thoughts exactly my friend, whatever drugs whoever did it was on, must've been good s**t haha!

It is literally a section of mild steel box section shoddily (even a word?) welded onto the silencer, as you would imagine, the silencer being stainless and all...

Oreca Group N awesomeness at the ready, as soon as it is delivered from K-Tec

  Renault Clio 172
exhuast is just shocking

Yes we all know the exhaust is shocking I have covered this topic a few times ;)

It shall be redeemed with some Oreca awesomeness very very soon, like when the posty turns up with my K-Tec parcel ;)

  Renault Clio 172
Well these turned up just now

IMAG0037.gif

only ordered yesterday morning, very good service from http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/

Thought I would treat myself to some LED sidelight bulbs while I was there, anyone had any MOT issues with these?

Also, ordered a Xenon igniter from Renparts this morning, very good service and got a little discount from the eBay listing price, figured it will be "sods law" if I pull apart the front end to change the xenon lamps it will be the igniter at fault, rather have one at hand when I do the job

Can also now guarantee it will be the ballast as it will be the only bit I don't have... :banghead:

Thanks for the comments guys, just waiting on K-Tec now and then the work can start

K-tec are normally quite good with delivery so it wont be long.

I've never had a problem with led bulbs on my mot, however I have a "happy" mot guy so he's not that bothered! Think it is a fail though if you take it to a main mot place ie: Kwik-fit, formula one, etc. If you was to take it to a small mot garage I'm sure they would ignore it.

Thanks for the information pal, my house mate is a mechanic at an independent Mercedes specialist and sorts out MOTs for me, he doesn't test at his place he farms it out but it's a nice friendly car enthusiast tester with some mental cars so I'm sure it will be fine :)

Regards K-Tec mate I'm not moaning, they have been in touch with me a couple of times and explained the small hold up to me and kept me very informed I can't fault their service and Bex has put herself out to get things moving forward. I'm just like a kid at Christmas that's all :p

With regards to led lights, I was told by the mot station I use that a long as they are white light, they will pass. Not sure if he's just friendly or that's the norm tho.

Ah thanks mate, they are deffinately pure white with not a sniff of blue tint to be seen, fitted them this morning, make a great little improvement from what i could see, match the Xenons much better. Will be able to get a better opinion when it gets dark :)

Just the drivers Xenon to sort now, hopefully Renparts will pull through with the Igniter pack delivered before the weekend ready for me to pull the front end off. Well i might have an attempt at fitting the new igniter pack without removing the headlamp, because i have skinny girl arms / hands

  Renault Clio 172
Have you got a link to the sidelights you bought? I've bought a few "white" sets before but they always seem to have a slight blue tint to them :(

No problem buddy,

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/501-error-free-5-smd-led-sidelights-bulbs/

Those are the fellas right there, they are a really nice tight fit into the lamp holder and appear to fit perfectly into the actual headlamp.

They looked great last night in the dark, very crisp white and lovely and bright, seem really good quality.

Also worth noting that if anyone is interested brand new genuine Hella Xenon igniter packs and ballast are available from the same place, at a large saving over Renault prices.

Does anyone know if these are the new updated bushes that do not require welding into the wishbone? They are the black bushes too not the purple ones if that helps?

And yes I know there are three washers missing... Going to have to ring K-Tec in the morning :(

  Renault Clio 172
I've mentioned this in the relevant areas, but just posting here too to keep the thread concurrent.

Rang K-Tec this morning, the above kit with the different metal sleeves and black bushes is indeed the new updated kit, Powerflex state welding is not required although K-Tec have advised me that they personally would anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Regards the missing washers / shims Anthony had them sat on his desk, and has posted them out to me next day delivery FOC

Excellent service, very very pleased :)

Looks like it won't take to long to catch me up if you keep spending at this rate lol

Going to really nice when you have finished it:)

  Renault Clio 172
Thanks mate :) the cash flow has dried up now I'm afraid haha would love to go supercharged but its a bit out of reach in costs at the moment, maybe next year....

Mechanically I think after all the above parts are bolted on I will go down the cosmetic route and just make it minty fresh, either a wheel refurb or a set of different ones are on the cards and some interior plans too :)

Need to get her detailed ready for winter soon too !

  Renault Clio 172
Thanks mate :) hopefully the exhaust will be fitted tomorrow, minus the decat section because its MOT time shortly, don't see the point until after the test.

hopefully it looks okay with the shitty cut out in the bumper, long term I will be sourcing a replacement bumper but its getting quite hard to find one that hasn't been cut out to house a tailpipe of some sort :(

Update Time

Right, so since last Saturday quite a bit of progress has been made, my picture taking skills are terrible and i was a bit of a fail at taking them, was far to busy in the garage to be taking pictures all the time ;)

so Saturday:

Fitted Genuine Renault Cup Dampers
Fitted Eibach Sportlines
Fitted Whiteline RARB
Fitted Oreca Group N (Minus the decat section)
Fitted KTR Induction Kit

Genuine Oil
Genuine Oil Filter
NGK PFR6E-10
Fitted Replacement Oil Breather Baffle Plate on the cam cover, mine had the brass 90 degree bend for the breather pip sheard off and wasnt fitted correctly (a few bolts sheard off too) and was leaking oil all over the place :)

No wonder i had some poor cold starting and strange idleing issues, Bosch Super 4's strike again....so much better on the NGK's, start up is much improved as is idle characteristics, accelleration is much smoother and with the Oreca and KTR IK it seems to pull so much harder, earlyer smoother power delivery.

Still to do :

Fit KTR Engine Mounts inc New lower gearbox mount and Powerflex Dogbone
Fit KTR CNC Lower Inlet manifold
Fit Pollen Cabin Filter
Fit Decat section (After the MOT as it is imminent)
Fit Powerflex FARB bushes
Fit Powerflex Lower Wishbone Bushes

So here are some piccies anyway :) All work carried out by myself and my housemate at his garage Scott's Autotec Independant Mercedes Specialist /shamelessplug

IMAG0051.gif

New front cup dampers built up with eibach sportlines (I know there are no dust covers / bumpstop bits, i didnt anticipate the originals being completely disintigrated so never ordered new ones, i will fit some eventually)

IMAG0060.gif

And on the car :)

IMAG0057.gif

Sneaky rear short showing the Whiteline, Rear Suspension and Oreca ;)

IMAG0058.gif

IMAG0059.gif

The Oreca was blowing terribly from the centre section to rear section join, hence the paste, this was later cleaned up when cured :)

IMAG0056.gif

Bit more Oreca Goodness ;) Over the past week the join seems to have slipped slightly and the tailpipe is hanging slightly lower now, need to try hike it back up a bit :(

IMAG0053.gif

A nice full on rear shot :) I am on the lookout for a totally standard rear bumper now, to rid the car totally of its wounds from the (powerflow) system with the square tip i removed, also i find the big hole makes the oreca look like it is hanging lower than it really is.

IMAG0055.gif

IMAG0054.gif

Couple of the rear suspension :)

I fitted a new rear exhaust hanger as the old one was just totally gone, also found i had to remount the hanger about an inch further towards the rear so it could successfully support the Oreca system :S And strangely enough all the holes appeard to already be there, minus captive nuts, but with a few swear words some grazed knuckles and some fresh M8 bolts later this was cured :)

Update Part 2

Yesterday (Saturday 13th October 2012)

I removed the front bumper, pulled out the old headlamp washers, no wonder they didnt work, offside isnt even connected up and the nearside is the one with the horrible brown water stain under it, obviously blocked and leaking. But anyway, picked these little gems up on friday afternoon to replace them :)

IMAG0065.gif

IMAG0066.gif

(new on top obviously)

IMAG0067.gif

and again

Megane 225 Headlamp washers, as you can see, much smaller and neater, fit the bumper perfectly and still aim directly at the headlamp, also a bit more robust than the dire Clio ones :)

IMAG0069.gif

This also turned up for all you OCD's out there :)

IMAG0070.gif

IMAG0071.gif

All very exciting :)

IMAG0072.gif

Brown water stain be gone!

IMAG0073.gif

Spent a few hours cleaning her, the amount of contaminants that were removed by the Iron X just amazed me, didnt get to polishing or waxing yet, so it will all be redone this week when i pick up some more QD so i can clay her too :)

IMAG0074.gif

Cheeky rear shot ;)

IMAG0068.gif

This also happened, because my tyres were just plain dangerous tbh

IMAG0075.gif

And a cheeky shot of the said new boots :)

P Zero Nero all round, and tracked up, drives 1000x better, best purchase yet tbh :)

I Also eventually fixed my offside headlamp while the bumper was off, after buying both an ignitor pack and a ballast aswell as the pair of bulbs it was indeed the bulb that had gone, so the ballast has been returned to HIDS Direct (+£77.50 back to me), i fitted both bulbs as the ones i removed were 6000K, these are 4200K and much whiter, brighter and better on the road :)

Still £22.50 down on the ignitor though if anyone needs one?

I also noticed when i was fettling with the headlamp the whole lower part of the headlamp is free to moved, and appears to "sag" low in the headlamp, i can see it should be attached to both the auto levelling motor at the bottom, and what appears to be a ball joint at the top, this part is what has popped free making the light sag :( I couldnt seem to pop it back on either...New headlight time :banghead: right before the MOT aswell :(

The keen eyed amongst you will notice i havnt fitted the headlight washers yet, this is because i needed the bumper secure on the car so i could polish out the horrible stain, i had fixed the headlamp so bumper had to come off anyway, i am also waiting until i have attempted a correction on my headlamps so i dont get polish all over them and will have a bit more space to work :) Although i dont see any point in correcting the offside :(

Thanks for looking guys :)

  Renault Clio 172
Good thread mate, whats the crack with the headlights, you just lightly sand them down and they look ok, or do you need to remove them from the car?

Thanks, keep it up ;)

There is a guide on here mate, a quick breakdown is use waterproof masking tape all around the headlight on the car body work (Wing, bonnet & bumper) so you dont accidently catch anything, wet and dry with 1200 until a smooth even finish is acheived, repeat with 1500, get some meguires scratch x and feel the burn, or go to halfords and buy a little foam polishing wheel for a cordless drill (see my picture on page 1) :)

Get it done it's a piece of piss! Nice to see you're saving one that's worse for wear, WTF was that tailpipe? LOL.

Haha cheers pal, yes it was terrible, previous owner must have thought the powerflow system wasnt enough and it required the stealth tip removing and some mild steel box section welding on to make it even higher quality ;)

Its gone now though! I have been putting a lot of investigation into removing tint film too, may attempt it this week...

On the other hand a couple of guys who have worked on it (the bloke who did my tyres for me and Mick@DiamondMotors) have all commented on overall the car has been well looked after and is a very good example, just needs a bit of TLC to get rid of those dodgy styling choices by previous owners :)

Little update from todays endeavours :)

Headlight Correction.

IMAG0077.gif

Equipment at the ready :)

IMAG0078.gif

Thoughourly degrease the headlamps (Chemical Guys Orange Degreaser diluted 1:5)

IMAG0079.gif

Apply waterproof masking tape to protect surrounding areas

IMAG0080.gif

After attacking said headlamp with 1200 and 1500 wet and dry paper (soaked in hot soapy water)

IMAG0081.gif

Bit extra equipment...

IMAG0082.gif

Nearside after the scratch X treatment

IMAG0083.gif

Nearside with a coat of AutoGlym SRP also worked with the foam wheel

IMAG0086.gif

Nearside complete after removal of masking and a coat of Collinite :)

IMAG0084.gif

IMAG0085.gif

Couple of offside after shots fully finished with a coat of collinite

5 hours work all in all, it isn't "hard" just time consuming, but as with all jobs if its worth doing its worth doing right :)

I think i will probably have another bash at them, they arn't perfect, but very close to. Will probably leave it until after the winter has been and gone and redo them in the spring :)

Yeah it does need a standard rear bumper, it is next on the shopping list when i have some spare cash, when the stupid cut out is gone the Oreca won't look half as daft sitting under the bumper, i will adjust it so it sits tight up to the bottom of the bumper and all will be well. And you would change your mind on the exhaust if you heard it ;)

Regards to total cost i dont really want to think about it haha including the car i would say around £3500, which in fairness when i was looking to buy a 172 all the ones i looked at that were similar mileage were around the 3K mark so overall i dont think its too bad....
