Idea...

  Never above 25mpg
OK, I was struck by a massive idea earlier and decided that it may be possible for ownership of a 172 at 18...

This is all providing I get a new job fairly soon too.

My idea basically was to save a few hundred each month in the new job I get, sell my 1.4 (after returning it to standard) then with the money saved up and the money from the sale of the car I can buy the new 172 and pay for the extra £1k (maybe) in insurance...

Was wondering responses to this because I dont really want to spend £600 making my car look like a 2.0 when I couldve spent that extra on insurance or money towards the new car...?

Laurence :approve:

if an rs is what you want for definite then yes save up but dont buy one if you cant afford it. remember its not just about buying the car and insurance , you have to maintain it. ie mot , tax , petrol etc

I got my 172 a day after by 19th birthday, its not the mot or petrol (if you drive it sensibly) its the tax and insurance that is the struggler. If you think you can do it, you absolutely should.

the money would be better invested in a 172, then spent on modifying your 1.2.

I have a 1.4 :rasp: (EDIT - damn beat me haha)

But yeah Im paying £1100 TPFT currently for my car but my dad's always said to me you can afford anything as long as you have the money...!

I really wouldnt mind a 2.0 as the Clio's a favoured car to me in all honesty.

Are the 172s, 182s and FF/Cup/Trophies all in the same insurance group band??

Got my Cup at 19. Struggled badly at first, untill I sorted my finances and started working with my Dad. The only thing that bothers me now is the price of tax. I love the car to bits, and the insurance can only get cheaper. Although petrol at the moment is a joke. I put £30 of VPower in on Sat, which filled half a tank, and by Monday I'd gone through about two thirds of it. Had a little bit of a play of course but nothing major.

I read in one of the threads sticking the higher octane in did nothing tbh so Im not going to be filling the car up with that when I get it..

My car runs alot smoother with VPower. I keep thinking I'm fooling myself and switch back to super unleaded. Then I'll stick VPower in and it just seems so much smoother and 'warmer' from the go. I dunno. You'll probably want to drive it all the time at first obviously, and my old Dynamique didn't get that much more MPG than the Cup. So If you're happy with petrol at the moment, you should be fine.

  RS 172
If you've got the money, might as well do it. Obviously I guess you should be tipple with the right foot to start with but I'm sure it will be cool!

Insurance is killing me, I'm 19 with a 182, struggling to find anywhere that will insure me.
If you've got no claims bonus you should have an eas(ier) time, but having no ncb, you're looking at in excess of 3,000 for insurance

It's cliche but have you tried Elephant? At least you can keep your mods. I was with them the frist year, then directline, and back to Elephant. I'm about £980 including wheels, exhaust, IK, 'Interior changes,' and my yet to be fitted 'lowering springs.' Not a bad deal. Managed to get the Roadside cover for half price just by saying 'no' the first time too.

Im with Quinn Direct at the moment, have a years no claims too. Only reason I stayed was because I get to drive mum and dads cars on my policy

Are you sure ? You said you were TPFT earlier, Most insurance companies now wont insure you 3rd party only on other cars unless your 25 and fully comp, be careful there mate

Dont skint yourself to run a 172 imo, keep the 1.4, dont bother with the replica business either. Money in the bank is the winner and in a few years time go for a 197 which will be worth 3k by then lol

I remember when I was 18/19 and all my mates were paying stupid amounts on insurance etc to own the fast cars - thinking about it now was a waste of time imo.

Haha Im not really a fan of the mk3, weighs alot and the performance is undercut by the mk2!

I have no overheads either really apart from rent to the folks and going out on the weekend so it's not like I couldnt afford to run it... just need that job now :D

Is your dad sherlock holmes? lol

172 ftw

ROFL :D

Wouldn't bother with something like a 172/182 at 18 really. Insurance will be a killer even on TPFT. And if you did manage to prang it then you would be well gutted with only 3rd party cover.

I remember when I got my XR3i when I was 20, the insurance was stupid. And then the gearbox went, then the wheel bearings went, then something else went, & it was just eating every penny I had. Well you aren't gonna get a sporty car at that age & drive it like a granny are you :)

I love my 172, but the way things are going atm with petrol & tax etc. I'm thinking of getting something a bit more practical.

Waste of money really as they're not that quick anyway

TBH I wouldnt even consider buying a 1*2 if I was going to be insuring it TPFT.

Ah I never said I was going to keep insurance on TPFT, just that that's what Im on at the moment.

I think I'll be weighing up the situation in a couple months to get the best idea of costs, petrolwise Im obviously annoyed about the prices but nothing will happen about them so it's a loss of oxygen moaning about them.

If I cant get a 172 I'll be trying for a mk1 1.8 16v, could be cheaper but at the moment Im set on a 172.

Parents arent bothered by the idea either which is good news.

don't bother. i personally think you should wait until you are older and have some money if you really want an RS.

i get pissed off paying £450 for my insurance, f**k paying anythnig over £1000 for yearly cover. totally pointless.

No spending money on cigarettes and putting money on a race with somthing that has a tail hanging out its arse is a waste of money, paying high insurance premiums is all about starting from scratch to make it cheaper, i choose to pay over £1000 because i can afford to not because its pointless:boring:

Well some people are saying they're paying £1700 for insurance @ 19 or 20 which to me sounds decent!!
I paid £1500 for my Clio insurance with 0 NCB and on TPFT last year and to me that's ridiculous but I dont smoke, dont bet or gamble and occasionally drink alot now and again.
This year my insurance was reduced £400 so Im quite happy with that, I wouldnt mind paying out an extra £400+ to drive a faster, better car.

Get a dci80 and remap.

I wouldn't pay more than £400 a year for a 1*2, it's only a clio at the end of the day.

Exactly mate, to insure a 1.4 16v Dynamique it was £675, or a 172 for £1130...

"let me phone you back...." ffs:S

i'm not saying go on your parents insurance. what i mean is, have your own premium, but buy something thta won't rape you at insurance time. All my cars prior to my first ''quick'' car, the 182 where all sub insurance group 4.

i see little point in teenagers buying a group 16 car and paying the crazy premiums they do. let alone the fuel cost etc.

I personally see it as a waste of money but then people want different things and will spend their money on what they want!

Very True^

Although this is what the insurance companies want, young guys with big fast cars that they can charge whatever the f**k they feel like regardless of circumstances! Its a license to print money ffs!

And the best of it is, even if you get a years NCB they still try and hit you with a higher premium to chance there luck (although 9/10 times sumwhere else will do it cheaper).

I hate insurance the companies are more crooked than the people that drive without!
