I'm new, and really want a Clio!

Hello guys and gals, currently got a Saxo VTR, and seeing as ive hit 21 now, was looking at upgrading to a VTS. BUT, theres just something about Renaultsport Clios that makes me want one!

For instance, looking round my Sax, what do u get for a 2nd to top of the range car?! Nothing at all!!

A Clio 172 on the other hand, i want a few luxuries!

So, ive been looking at early mk2 172s, the ones with xenons etc, but i can only raise around £4800 at the most, so im struggling!

Am i likely to get a mk2 for this money, and if not, should i bother with a mk1, because im struggling for a mk1 too!

Im a mechanic, so maintainance costs dont really apply, but does a higer mileage mean danger on a Clio, same as it does an a Saxo (02 reg, 50k, currently waiting for new camshaft, had gearbox rebuild, and coil recently!)

172 were only made in MK2 clios,there is a phase 1 (172 only) and a phase 2 (Full fat 172 and then the 172 cup). Then came the 182. (MK1 clios were the Valver and the Williams)

For £4800 you should be able to get a 172, Ive just looked on autotrader and there are quite a few mostly phase 1's though

I would deffo go for a 172 over the VTS, its faster, better image, has more toys etc IMO its a far superior car

Know what ye mean mate.

I've had a VTS for the last 2 years. Just traded it yesterday for a mk2 172. My VTS being top of the range I got, abs, cd and twin airbags. That's it.

The 172 I get leather, air con and climate, cruise, esp, abs, 6 airbags, 6 cd changer, xenons, loads of stuff basically.

I'd wait until you can really afford it as I have, by then, you'll have more money and prices will have fallen a bit.

Saxos are great at what they're meant to be, cheap, fast and fun. VTS has performance just as good as a 172 until you start to go illegal.

Garf, are u biased by any chance?!

Ill never be able to afford it! Im gonna sell the Sax, then sell all the mods, so thats how i hope to raise the £4800. Theres one thing that i really want, and thats xenons! When i bought the Sax i was pricing up a 1.4 Billabong, and was gonna order it with the xenons. Shame the 'phase 1' doesnt have them!
