Info about 182s

  LY R26 #288
Well I'm on the verge of buying a full fat 182. Basically looking for any info you guys can throw at me. A few things I would like to know is availability/prices of parts. Are parts expensive and hard to come by in comparison to other cars out there?.

How much does Renault charge for your 'regular service'?

What are the most common problems to look out for?

Will I be able to drive it hard occasionally without worrying about it blowing up? lol! (a constant worry with a Punto GT)

Basically any info will be of help. Its probably been asked before but i just want a quick burst of info from you guys instead of sifting through hundreds of previous posts.

Thank you :)

Parts are readily available. A lot is available from factors for reasonable prices, some stuff is expensive and dealer only. Like any car I guess.

Renault do a service and MOT deal for about £129 iirc, not 100% though. The service is very easy to DIY.

Common problems, not really sure. Most people seem to have different ones. Rotten exhausts maybe?

Mine takes a regular thrashing with (touch wood) no problems, just keep on top of oil changes. Renault are ok but there's plenty of cliosport specialists that are worth going to. Prices for some things are cheap, others dear. There's plenty of the stuff that breaks a lot on eBay, or people will sell you on here

Coil packs, and door hinge thingys (not the hinge itself, the thing that stops you opening the door too far) are quite common problems too

Drive it hard only occasionally? That's a crime!

My Cup is on approx. 125k and has been royally spanked and relentlessly tracked/sprinted from new by me. Apart from servicing it every 6k instead of the factory recommended 12k, it's never had any special treatment and soaks the abuse up.

Servicing? Avoid Renault like the plague. I've only every used Mike at Rentech in Portsmouth - you'll find huge amounts of praise for his work, service, and value.

Consumables are cheap considering the performance on offer. Brakes are reasonable, tyres not too bad (better if you get a set of 15s) - there's not really anything else they need.

As above, Rentech are brilliant. There's several good specialists around the country.

Parts are much cheaper than for anything else with equivalent performance.

The engines, as long as they're serviced regualrly and looked after, are incredibly reliable. There's a lot of people with clio's that have done 120,000 miles+ and still run every single day without fail.

Most common problems: Mostly electrical niggles. Easy and cheap to fix if you know how.

Beats your Punto in every single way.

And I've always found Camskill.co.uk to be cheaper than blackcircles, but black circles are a bit more convenient because they offer delivery to, and fitting at, a local garage of your choice.

Thanks for the quick replys!.

I'm handy with the tools so I could do my own servicing but id prefer to keep the service history up to scratch as I will be buying one with fsh. Other things like suspension/lower arms etc Im easily capable of.

The main reason I asked about parts is because Ive only had one dealing with Renault and that was when my old mans Kangoo van broke down, the thermostat was knackered. But Renault didnt just do the stat they sold the housing with it costing a wopping £70!. But I guess its like any vehicle. Some parts are dealer only.

Mark I looked at your motor yesterday as I drove passed. Does it have a sun strip? (if not, its not your car ive seen lol!)

I've had a few things to do to mine this month, but it's just been bad luck that they've all come at once really.

As you said, get your servicing done by a specialist, just for the stamp. But anything else, I'm going to do myself. Even if you don't know what you're doing, someone on here will be able to help.

The important thing when you're buying a RS is that you get one with good service history, stamps, reciepts and paperwork. People on here always say that a car with higher mileage and a good service history will be much better than a low miler with nothing.

Yeah all the ones I've picked out from auto trader have fsh with around 50k on the clocks. I've just gotta sort my finances out and get out there and have a look at some. I havent even driven a clio sport yet. But I'm sure i'll like it if the handling is as good as everyone says it is.

Handling is awesome, tons of grip (providing it's got decent tyres) and the lift off oversteer is easily spotted and kept in check.
