Installing a mk2 172 steering wheel

Can anyone tell me how to install a 172 steering wheel in my dynamique?

You need to disconnect the battery and wait 20 minutes
Then iirc, you need to prise the front off the wheel and disconnect the airbag. Also have to undo the bolts there.
Actually I'm not much use as cant remember any except the basics!

cliospares didnt disconnect my battery at all, and said you'd have to hit the motion sensor to make the airbag go off. he turned the wheel to 90degrees, from which position the two lugs are visible on the back of the wheel. you need to fork these lugs (one at a time obviously) to the side whilst pulling the airbag towards you. you'll feel it click out of place.

once the airbag is loose you have to remove it and disconnect the wire on the back. you will have just the one wire for a standard 1.2 or if you have cruise control you will have two connectors.

there is a bolt that connects the wheel to the boss, so undo the bolt and remove the wheel. place the new wheel into place, and then tighten it back up. then connect the electric terminal and then push the airbag back in making sure that it sits perfectly flush all round.

done.

So where abouts on the wheel are the 2 lugs and where on the wheel is the motion sensor so I dont hit it?

its not in the wheel IIRC so there no need to worry. better to be safe tho and disconnect the battery, but he was absolutely wacking it and it was fine.

lugs are behind the steering wheel, around the 2 vertical spoke area. so run your hand down the back of the spoke and you'll find it (you can actually see it when you turn the wheel to the side.)

i would have thought the sensors for the airbags are somewhere near the front of the car, not near the wheel itself.

Do yourself a favour and just disconnect the battery!

The last thing you want is it going off and seriously injuring yourself.

yeah i think i will, no problem anyway as its been disconnected all week, just gotta find these lugs.

Its not a good idea to leave the negative on the battery when doing anything involving the electrics. A remaining charge can be enough for them to go off - or a surge

think u'd actually have to wack the sensor to make it go off dont think surge alone would cause it but best be safe than sorry, this bloke obviously knew what he was doing, and was adament he didnt need to disconnect the battery (i did question it) but if your doing it yourself best to be safe. Best bit of all was it cost me 90 quid for the wheel and fitted for free

my wheel cost £60, £50 for the wheel and a tenner for another renault sport insert.

do you have a way of getting your hands on the haynes manual? because i did work from diagrams in there. my scanner isnt working so i cant copy them for you
