Installing SATA hard drive

  Skoda
Can anyone help.... My IDE hard drive is on its last legs so I've got get a new SATA drive.. I've fitted the SATA drive and my computer sees it ok.. I want to copy the existing IDE drive including the OS over to the new SATA drive then remove the IDE one.... Where do I start? I've got norton ghost 10 but not sure what to do!!

leave both plugged in
make sure the sata is blank, boot up in dos to ghost, and you want to copy disk to disk, make sure you do it the right way round lol, that should clone it, test by unplugging the ide, and you should be off.

Cheers will start now.... When its cloned and I unplug the IDE drive do I need to change any other settings to make it boot form the SATA drive?

Nope, as long as Ghost sets the partition on the SATA drive as "active", then if it was booting off the old drive before it should boot off the SATA drive just fine.

The only thing that might happen with SATA is if you have any other PATA HDDs in the system then the first one of those will end up as C: and your SATA drive will be on a subsequent letter, if so you should be able to swap the order of PATA/SATA drives in the BIOS.

Drivers will probably c**k you up, and it won't boot.

You normally have to set the IDE controller drivers to generic etc on the old drive before hand.. unless Ghost is cleverer than I think? (which I doubt, it's a Symantec product :p)

OK.... 6 hours of my life wasted!! Used ghost and it didn't boot...
so did a bit of searching around and found maxtor maxblaster.. It took about 30 mins to clone my IDE drive to SATA drive and then booted straight from the SATA drive no problems.... Ghost WTF!!! 6 hours and nothing

Sorry I forgot about the drivers :S Although I didn't know Maxtor Maxblast dealt with drivers etc either so maybe that wasn't the source of the problem.

I've never used Ghost myself (hatred of Symantec products as Daz said ;)), I use Acronis as d-anie-l suggested, it allows you to perform all sorts of trickery :)

Glad you got it working in the end, if you have any further probs let us know :)

I think the maxtor maxblaster is acronis packaged in maxtors own gui.. Anyway all working now and the SATA is a massive improvement in speed over the IDE... Thanks all for the help

Yeah, SATA is blindingly fast compared to PATA... especially on bootup :)

No probs, hope it continues to go well ;)
