Institute of Advanced Motorists and your insurance

  BMW Z4 3.0i
I'll do anything to lower my car insurance premium (apart from buy a 1.2). Does anyone know if passing the test with the IAM (institute of advanced motorists) ever reduces your insurance? I know a lot of places do pass plus, but only to make up for being in the first year of driving. Whenever I get quotes online, the forms never seem to ask if you're a IAM member or not, which would suggest it wouldn't get you any discount.

Have any of you passed the test and how does it affect your insurance premiums? Cheers.

If you find a company that asks if you have apssed it then they should give you a discount, otherwise it would be silly to ask for it

I got a quote and it appeared to knock £30 off my premium. (woohoo! :-/ )

Anyway, regardless of that, it will make your driver smoother and safer so you will a) save money on petrol by getting better mpg, and b) save money by reducing your risk of crashing.

Go for it! :)

My local one does a refund of the cost if you are under 26 as well so ring your local place and find out what they are offering!

I found that those companies that offered a little extra discount for being IAM qualified, were normally more expensive in the first place making the extra discount worthless.

Agree with White16valver ^^^ too.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a miss then. I'm 24 and the website they knock a tenner off if you're under 25. It's not that expensive but I mainly wanted to reduce my insurance. I'm already a smooth driver and I'd also be safe too if I drove slowly. I accept the fact I'm more likely to crash cos I do drive fast sometimes, but then you guys must all do that too, otherwise why own a Renaultsport? So I don't really feel I'd benefit.
