Insurance ball ache (197.net)

  182, SQ7, Trafic
Had same thing with my R32 Golf.

Paid £12k and was mint, very low mileage, full service, full leather etc... Written off 5 weeks later and only got offered 10,200, kicked up a fuss and got 10,500.

I then rung every day for months just being fobbed off and getting angrier. After 3 months I just left it. f**king ridiculous.

That was the glasses guide figure! Luckily gap insurance covered it. But was fighting after that as an extra 1.5k in my pocket would of been nice!

From having a quick flick, he's pissed about being offered £6700 rather than £7300?

In fairness, that is less than 10%, and although it's annoying it is to be expected.

My claim was ok, car only devalued £250 in 3 months, was just about to need a service, tyres soon, and I'd added 3k to the clock

its stuff like this that makes me hate insurance companies more.

poor guy, I hope he gets it sorted. And lol at recaros not adding value to the car!

it seems the cons of insurance far outweigh the pros now. But hey ho, what can we do ey.

The thing is though, you only hear about the ones which go wrong. In that particular case, his broker should be working on his behalf to get the true value paid out, we'd certainly be fighting the customer's corner if we felt the vehicle was being under-valued. Also, they are only £600 out on value, yes I appreciate that is still £600 but it really shouldn't be an issue getting up to the £7300 with a bit of knowledge and evidence being provided.

It would appear that we(customers) cant beat insurers :(

I've seen many, many people getting payouts of far more than their cars are worth, as I say, you only hear reports of the claims which go wrong. In fact one (via buying salvage back) saw a £10k profit , although that's unusual.

That's not 100% true as mine was through you?

Pre-agree a value with your insurance company and you're nothing to worry about, right?

With an agreed valuation, yes. You get the full agreed value back minus policy excess. This something we can offer but usually for limited mileage, second cars, eg we woudn't offer this for a smokey old Phase 1 doing moon mileage each year.

I don't get this, if you're not found to be at fault, surley the other drivers insurance company pays out? Thus meaning it wouldn't matter what your insurance company pays out as they'll claim it back anyway?

The good thing is although they are undervaluing the car I bet they have undervalued the salvage by even more, they wont take into account the amount of money a set of recaros sell for etc.
Bit like Lukes trophy, they sold it back to him for peanuts!

The OP in that thread should get himself off to a claims recovery company and into an expensive hire car and then take his time arguing it out, when they are paying out hundreds of pounds a week it changes their mind about what sort of deal they want to do IME!

When someone ran into me back in august in my little 1.2 clio extreme, they didnt just base it on the glasses guide they also used things like autotrader to see how much the same model etc. was going for within 40 miles of my address, i was expecting about £800 which i would of been happy with but in fact they offered me £1250 because of cars local to me at this price,

Quite surprised really but i suppose it swings in roundabouts based on whats about for sale at the time (thats on the assumption all insurance companies do what mine did ??? )

And all that was taking time to get sorted was an arguement over a few hundred quid like in this case?

If so I cannot imagine why they let that happen, they certainly dont normally, if its just a few hundred quid being argued over and they are spending thousands on hire car they are normally very quick to give you the benefit of the doubt!

IIRC we've had a couple on this forum fairly recently where they've received really good payouts. Like waaay over what I'd expect to receive.

Well, there you go then.. and you are one of hundreds of thousands.

ANother example was a friend who was about to sell his car for £2k, had a car crash into him, he ended up getting £3k from the insurance. It works both ways

The only total loss I had worked out in my favour.

I bought a 306 D turbo for £1,550, drove it for 18 months, added 40k on the clock. Wrote it off and got £1,836 back from the insurance (first offer and I snatched there hand off!)

It's swings and roundabouts!

does gap insurance still work if after you've paid the car off? Say you've taken the gap insurance out for 3 years alongside your finance... But if you pay off the car in the first year, does gap insurance still work or is it cancelled?

and ollie (sky insurance), I understand that there are often good outcomes from insurance but you seem to see more rants/complaints than you see praises... Unless people are just ungrateful and don't praise their insurance.

and yeah, it's just a few hundred quid, but if it was me, I'd want a like for like car, and I don't have £600 spare that I'd be able to put towards a new one.

Happened to my mum, twice.

1) Ford escort (was up forsale) - rolled down the driveway of it's own accord, weaved it's way around a few trees before hitting a big tree square on - write off - insurers paid out £1000 over the sale value

2) MR2 - stolen from train station - again was up for sale - insurers paid out £1k more than sale price, car never recovered.

know the circumstances were different , but the 3rd party need not have let any of that happen , the car should have been written off but they choose to repair , after weeks of screwing about .

its a long story .......

when our audi was hit by a 3rd party i pointed out the clause in our insurance that stated that the replacement car would be of similar type (eg 4 seat convertible) and withing 200cc in engine size ......

have a think of how many 4 seat 3.9 to 4.5 convertibles you can come up with from a hire fleet ? all they had that matched was a continental GTC but it was there in black and white on our more than policy , after negotiation we took an sl500 which 2 days later turned into an S-class after the brand new Sl developed a misfire ....... and when the 3rd party asked interesting questions morethan our insurers stood up to them , and it was all settled very swiftly LOL.

yes, nail and head. Who praises an insurance company when things go right or in their favour? Less than 0.01% I'd say.

I agree 100% but they are not far off so with a bit of work it should be raised to the acceptable payout. Salvage value (if available) will also rise.

if I had a bad experience that I thought was worth sharing, I'd whack a thread straight up... But because of that, if I had exceptionally good service I'd whack a praise thread up.

My bad experiences so far would only be petty if I complained about them lol

Excellent suggestion. By having an agreed value you can set a value at the start of a policy that you know you are happy with then in the event of total loss you would receive this agreed sum less your policy excess. It takes the worry out of the claim payout situation.

Its especially worth it on highly modded cars and rarer models like the Trophy.

We can offer agreed value on a number of our policies. This service is free of charge but requires the customer to provide some photographs of the car to show its in good condition. The underwriters we use for agreed value are happy to offer it on all vehicles/mileages/situations providing the value requested is fair.

Best Regards

Not sure why the guy on 197 hasn't gone to the Financial Ombudsman?

When I wrote my car off I was offered £750 lol, got them to more than double that in the end.

In my opinion Insureance is overly priced and we never know the deal until something happens!
I had massive issues with my previous insurer when it came to accepting my NCB bonus after initially accepting it...3 months later decided they didn't want to because I had been on business Insureance!
I understand why people take the chance of driving without it at times! All that money spent and when it comes to needing it...nothing but hassle! It's a joke!

I'm not surprised, business insurance claim free experience is completely separate to private car NCB. However, if you told them it was not NCB then I can understand your frustration.

The thing is, insurance really is a breeze if you do everything correctly, answer all questions correctly and accurately, check your paperwork, find an insurer who can cater for your specific demands and you cannot really go wrong. The people who moan and get 'screwed over' (generally speaking) are those who have deceived their insurer or not checked the contract they are entering into or those who have insured with that cheap price on that wonderful price comparison site.
