Iphone 3G quick question

Sorry for being lazy, didnt really know what to search for. What I dont understand at the moment is whether they are actually being sold like the 2g was.i.e you go and buy then activate when you get it home?
I've got a payg with O2 as a secondary to my company phone. Been wanting the Iphone for ages. Will my O2 payg work in it? Or does it need all that Jailbreak nonsense?
