Is it possible to add the TCE turbo to the N/A 1.2 Clio?

  Clio Extreme 1.2 16V
Owner of a mk3 (pre-facelift) Renault Clio Extreme. 1.2, 16V, 75bhp, 2006 model. I’m wondering if it’s possible to fit the turbo from the 1.2 TCE to my car, or if there’s a difference in the internals of the engine. Or perhaps there’s a 6 speed gearbox as oppose to a 5 speed.

I’ve seen the turbos online pretty damn cheap. An extra 25 BHP or so sounds pretty nice:) any info would be greatly appreciated

Doubt it, not for less than the car is worth anyway.

Even if it was a straight bolt on, which it won't be, you've then got to get a manifold with link pipe for the exhaust, ecu and wiring for it, mapping etc.

Just buy a 172 if you want more power, can get one for about 500 quid these days lol.

Thanks for reply :) I found a turbo with the manifold attached for about 50 quid in excellent condition! A true Clio RS would be ideal but I’m only 21. Insurance would be mental for me even with my no claims. I’m also interested in working on my car as a project as I have access to a garage with all the tools I could ever need :D an engine remap isn’t too much these days

I bet your insurance on a modified boosted 1.2 won't be cheap either tbh.

Easy job if you have a smashed tce to swap it over to, do it in a morning. You can't just buy the turbo and bolt it on though as your question seems to be asking about

Basically I’m just curious as to what the differences are between the TCE and the N/A version. If the pistons are even the same.. I was struggling to find anything at all online but my guess is that the block itself is the same to save production costs

the block looks the same to me apart from the oil feeds for the turbo coming out the block, Head looks the same too except it uses an aluminium rocker cover vs the plastic one on the normal D4F. Inlet manifold is of course different, plastic on the D4F but aluminium on the D4FT. I believe it did say somewhere online when the engine was new that the internals of the engine were unchanged as they don't run a lot of boost but I wouldn't like to say that's true without proof.

to convert it easily you would want to just swap the engine over along with engine wiring loom, ECU/UCH You would need the cooling system as the D4FT runs an oil cooler running off the coolant system just above the oil filter, you would also need the intercooler and pipework. It really is a hell of a lot of work and of course a lot easier to just buy a TCE clio in the first place (but I suppose wheres the fun in that)

im looking at converting a mk2 clio 1.2 16V Clio to a TCE once my van is finished for a daily driver as its a cracking little engine, especially with 150hp lol

Excellent reply:) that does sound like a lot of work but I imagine surprisingly cheap if I were to do it myself. Sounds like a great project. I was thinking of getting a twingo RS but working on a car more intensely is something I’ve been dying to do. Plus the Clio drives superb in the corners for a cheap, 2006 car! My sister owned it for 6 years previous to me so it would be sad to let it go!

loads of internal parts are different, pistons, rods cams piston rings. same crank though.
pretty sure the turbo has piston oil sprayers that's the NA doesn't. that was just the parts I checked

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a tce? By the time you've found a tce engine with the ECU, loom etc and fitted it, then declared it to your insurance who will rip you off, I bet would cost you the same as just getting a tce.

Young drivers get ripped off as it is on insurance, I bet as soon as you tell them you've strapped a turbo to it the insurance will cost more than just insuring a stock TCE

If you can't afford insurance on an RS Clio you probs can't afford insurance on a modified 1.2 either

Buy a TCe, insurance will be affordable and they're not overly expensive.

  dan's cast offs.

my lads was almost £1,000 cheaper AFTER we boosted it.

Getting modified car insurance from a specialist can be cheaper than insurancing a car with no mods, with one of the mainstream insurers.

My old Pug was cheaper modded with Adrian Flux than any other company as standard too
