Iv been hussled!

  172 Cup
Bought my 182 a few months back now and love it! Great performance, great look! A few weeks back it started rattling and i thought nothing of it as it is a clio after all! Anyway it got worse and things were all wrong with it!

Take it to garage and he has a look at it and the mechanic tells me its not the orginal engine. Im like wtf? Its an 04 with 48000 miles and it apparently has an engine in it that looks and sounds like its done bout 100000 miles! He says it has yellow markers on it that are put on engines from broker yards! Anyway he replaces shocks and timing belt and the sump cause it has oil leak and the rocker cover! I was like ok not to bad! Anyway he drains oil out and flushes the engine and he says that th stuff that came out was the most thick disgusting stuff he had ever seen!

He said he then put the right synthetic oil in and when he did that it sounded like a tractor! I mean it really sounds like a diesel now and it is awful! He says the whole top part of engine (cams etc are worn and knackered and the top needs rebuild to make it all better again! Or he said replace engine but prob be more expensive!

So anyway i am now in 2 minds in what to do!

When i bought it it was hpi clear service history etc! all the usual stuff!

Mechanic thinks it has been clocked on miles and stuff!
This has annoyed me so much! I love the car and want to keep it but even i want to sell it who will buy a rattly one!!

It still performs welland goes like a rocket but really isnt up to its full potential!

Its annoyed me so much!

Any ideas on what u guys would do?

Was this a private sale?

If not i would be taking it back to the dealer/place you bought it.

Doesnt sound like its been taken care of in the slightest and could have had a bump which wasnt insurance declared, which is technically legal.

I doubt it would have been clocked, you can apply to the DVLA to find out all the MOTs taken after the 3 years and the milage of the car.

As for the engine sounds like a real bummer if it was replaced.

As above, private or dealer?

Does the engine number match the one on the V5?

Have you rung renault to confirm the engine number that goes with your chassis number? (assuming you have one and it's not a complete ringer...)

as said check the numbers on engine and chasis, if you didnt do this before purchasing, well what can i say

What's the registration number of the car, it may be known on here?

Who did the TB and cams on your car?

Ouch, sounds nasty

Whats with these yellow markers. There are blue/yellow dots on basically every part in my engine bay. Dodgy?

registration is MC04 RSY black 182

my mechanic is very trustworthy and doesnt bulls**t me!

I havnt checked chassis number etc in relation to V5 which was stupid but I think next step is to ring renault or something! I am not a great expert in this field so really dont know what to do!

How long have you had the car??

When I got my mk1 1.2 I was stitched up a treat but went to solicitors and they said I didnt have a leg to stand on because although I bought the car in good faith, because I wasnt of mechanical knowledge and the guy we bought it from claimed he didnt know anything of it, he got away scott free and I ended up with a £500 rust bucket that needed another £600 before it was roadworthy...

Tough but lessons learned

If it was a private sale and you didn't check the V5 to match up the engine to the car then sadly you'll be stuffed as it will have been sold to you as "sold as seen" ie you should have checked. It would not get picked up on HPI and therefore you're not covered. You're in a better position if you purchased from a garage.

First thing I'd do is check the engine number against the V5 as you've not confirmed if they match or not.

I wouldn't presume yellow or blue dots means engine change. If it's got writing on it in yellow then that may be different.

Coloured dots are QC checks that Renault do when the car is built!

Yellow writing is usually a breakers identifier as to what the parts are and what car they are for.

The point is to determine if it is his original engine or if it has in fact been changed, which the mechanic claims it has.

If the numbers don't match then it's been changed.

If they do match, Mr Mechanic is talking out of his ring.

And even if they do match, I'd be ringing Renault to check the engine number is the one it left the factory with, as you can change the engine number on the V5 if you do an engine swap afaik, which would mean that the numbers do match, even though it's all been changed.

I understand tht but does that mean his engine will be fixed straight after he's found out. TBH its useless info that wont help him in anyway possible :boring:

Am i missing the point? The engine could have been changed 10x, but if the one thats currently in there is fukt, your up s**t creek without a paddle??? Am i wrong???

Fair enough, it comes back, its been changed 4 times? How will this have any benefit to him wat so ever :S

He's still got a car with a knackered engine sat on the drive.....

Sorry to seem like a cnut but it was far too cheap, the saying you get what you paid for springs to mind.

i jus got my 04 plate 182 with 44000 miles for 5500 with full service history and both cup packs, thats a bargain!!!!

Yellow paint is normal, quality control checks. PM me the current engine number and I will tell you tommorrow if thats what it had when it left the factory.

I thought that if we went by the prices on here £5500 for an 04 plate 182 is way over the odds? ;)

My '53 plate 172 with 62k is is officially worth a bag of Cheese and Onion Walkers according to some folk on here...

It might be worth checking back through the service history (you state it has FSH) and ringing the dealers to see if it is genuine. I wouldn't have thought a full historied car would have oil like that in it. Did you check the condition of the oil when you bought it?

There must be a lot of clocked 172/182's out there now as no-one wants high milers. I know my wife's was used as a company car before she got it and I bet it's not the only one. Wouldn't be surprised if a load of those end up back as low milers with full history. Can't really beat a cared for car with loads of receipts, MOTs as well as FSH. Doesn't cost much to buy a service book and get a stamp made up, but the potential for profit is massive, especially if you have a high miler that won't sell.

So which one is it? Clocked or swapped lump?

Still not confirmed if you have checked the eng number against the V5
