John’s first Clio 172 (light resto project)

On the 9th or 10th of February I started looking at Clio 172 and 182 cars with a view to bringing one back to Leicester. After a false start involving a deal done on a 182, that was sold to somebody else (why is there no integrity anymore?), I woke up on Monday 11th February, started looking for a car to buy and within a couple of hours I was on the way to Taunton to do a deal on RY53 AYE. By teatime it was parked outside the house.

Not since the ex-Mrs John had a 1.2 Expression, had I driven a Clio.

My daily commute can be a round trip of 80 miles depending on where I’m working, making a diesel almost essential and, daily, I drive a 2007 Seat Altea FR with a few mods (wheels, coil overs, RARB, ALK, big brakes) that I pulled off my mk2 Octavia when I broke it. With the Altea marooned 50 miles away until the weekend, I’ve commuted in my new to me phase 2 172. On a good day, I get 45-47 mpg out of the Altea. On a bad day, it’s 38 - so imagine my surprise and delight to discover that my return trip from work up the M1 in the 172 delivered me home dead on 40 mpg.

So the car - it’s a 99,000 mile Flame Red phase 2 172, first registered on the 11th November 2003, and appears to be completely stock save for an optional 6 disc CD changer and a set of 182 wheels. It came with 363 days’ MOT and a stack of paperwork as thick as a phone book, including a couple of bits of paper work that have brought a small amount of concern, notably a report that shows after No. 2 injector was changed, compression on 1, 2 and 4 was 190psi and 150psi on No. 3 cylinder. I guess this is something that needs to be investigated. Other that, it’s had quite a lot money thrown at it over the years including a new throttle body and crank position sensor.

There are things that need to be addressed fairly soon, and this thread will act as a reminder for me to keep track of the things I’ve done and what’s outstanding.

First off, I need to:

Fix the headlight washers and rear washer;
Replace the baggy driver’s seatbelt;
Fix the passenger seat (it didn’t lock in place and when I tried to push the adjuster bar down, I pulled it off but at least the seat doesn’t move);
Fix the buzzing interior temperature sensor in the interior light unit;
Replace a CV boot;
Sort a new pair of front tyres and have the alignment done;
Replace the boot struts (they take a bit of effort to lift the tailgate);
Do the belts and dephaser as these were last done at 45k;
Find out what’s going on with the compression issue;
Decide whether the clutch needs doing - I don’t know whether I’m just not used to it, but the clutch seems quite heavy and with quite a high bite point;
Check the brakes with the car in the air as they feel like they’re binding a bit.

The things I’d like to do include:

A cheap head unit with DAB and Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and streaming music;
Dash cam;
Sort out the paint;
A set of springs (Eibachs or whatever the recommended ones ought to do it);
Inspect the dampers and exhaust and replace them if necessary.

And then, if funds allow or I find the stuff cheap:

A pair of buckets and harnesses;
Decent track happy pads, discs and fluid;
Couple of light cosmetic touches and a spare set of track wheels and rubber.

In the meantime, here’s a couple of photos

I commented on this on Facebook, looks very tidy! Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the paintwork in those pics. I've replaced the shocks on my new Flamer with cup shocks and Grams springs with new rainsport 3s - quite a difference! I'm in need of a bonnet and a bit of pdr even then it'll be a bit of a scruff.

I should have done a project thread on mine really as it's been some ordeal.

Cheers Dom
Front bumper needs a repaint, there are a couple of marks over the rear arch and by the drivers door handle, and a little dent in the bonnet.
I might get a set of phase 1 15s for track use because you can pick up a full set of Michelin PS3s for £130.

You might have to ask Dom directly mate, I’ve done nothing to mine yet - trying to redistribute some funds to get started. I’ve figured for the time being mine won’t be losing a penny, so as long as I keep it running it’ll be alright [emoji23]

  Clio 172 Cup
I intended that mate when I bought my cup and then the upgrades started and now I can’t sleep at night lol got all these things running through my head as to where I want to get the car too, handling needs upgrading for sure now

I lurk in this forum occasionally, generally when I need to learn how to do something and hope that somebody managed to write down all of the steps to do it and didn't delete the photos...

A lot has moved on from 2019 and I don't think I owned AYE for much, if any more, than a year. I even sold one of my instruments to pay for the belts to be done which at least meant when I sold it I got back the money I paid for the car plus the cost of the belts.

I did a track day at Curborough with some of the PSOC guys, used it intermittently and then decided that spending £700 on tax and insurance on a semi-ornament wasn't the best use of money.

So I sold it, had an ill-fated relationship with a '92 mk2 Golf 1.8 Driver with a 3 speed auto and then an out of control Corrado project.
Which evidently wasn't enough to be getting on with, so in 2021 I went and found another 172. It was another cheap one at £14000 and to this day I still don't know why I didn't buy one that had already had loads done to it, rather than doing it all myself. I also don't know why I didn't go for a 182 and in a nicer colour than black.

Fast forward from 2021 to now, I've spent far too much money, have had to have two lots of welding, put a new tailgate and bonnet on so I could save myself the hassle of removing the tint film from the rear window or paint the knackered lacquer from it being left under a drip for a year. I've just had the half cage and a K brace powder coated as they were going rusty, the belts were all finally done earlier this year, I've spent a fortune on genuine screws and clips from Renault and Vehicle Clips (most of which I didn't need), fixed the servo motor for the air con flaps and done some more track days.
If I remember I will try and document a write up of the work that's been done, but I might never visit this thread again!

For some perverse reason, I have a list of everything that's been done and how much it cost. Essential bedtime reading, so the list includes:
  • KTec engine and gearbox mounts
  • Rattle-free PMS shifter
  • Bimarco buckets (not the ones in the pictures with the wings)
  • Some sort of 4 point harness - Sparco off the top of my head
  • Alan Dent half cage
  • K brace
  • Half a false floor - I chucked the other half in a skip when I sold my house and moved out and decided I didn't have anywhere to keep it. Wish I hadn't now
  • Personal slightly dished steering wheel and PCD adaptor for Momo boss, which is handy because it helps with reach without a deep dish steering wheel
  • Most of the interior, except for the rear seats, retained because ClubSport innit
  • Some cheap stainless exhaust from Gravity Performance (I think they're called) on eBay because it was cheap. It's not too bad all things considered
  • KTec sports cat (managed to catch the boat on the post-Covid cat pricing and got nearly 300 quid for the OE one, which was useless because the case had split and the flange was knackered)
  • Magencor leads because I couldn't find OE
  • Some sort of induction kit that needs replacing
  • Dog bone mount (bought another one because I forgot I'd already done one)
  • Cup shocks and Grams springs
  • CL RC5 pads with Brembo (front) and OE (rear) discs
  • All the airbag lights sorted
  • Rota Slip wheels and 195/50/15 NS2Rs which will be AR-1s come the next change
  • KTec stud and nut conversion
  • 5mm spacers ONLY to make it easier to fit the Rota centre caps
  • Variety of oil leaks
I like to listen to the Archers Omnibus on catch up when I'm driving any distance (don't take the piss) so I wanted to put the rear door cars back in with a pair of speakers just to reinforce the volume a bit, because the exhaust is a bit noisy and Helen Archer can be a bit quiet sometimes. I bought two pairs of Alpine 5-1/4" speakers to replace the ones in the doors as well and imagine my joy at finding a pair of shitey Pioneer speakers with the original connectors cut off and joined to the wiring with gaffa tape (the wires weren't even twisted together).
I went to a scrap yard who let me cut the connectors off a Vauxhall something or other (they are all the same). I was going to de-pin and refit them to the original wiring with some proper terminals but I couldn't be bothered, so I crimped and heat shrank new connectors on to them.

I had a full litre bottle of oil leak over the carpet in the back, which soaked all the way through it and the insulation. I've cleaned out the carpet as best I can and managed to replace the insulation. I've recently managed to get hold of a genuine OE radio aerial (from Estonia). I haven't tested it outside yet and I can't get any reception in the garage, so I hope it's not something else wrong with it. I also tracked down a pair of genuine OE key fobs and a new gear gaiter from RPD. The latter was a bargain at only £44 (!) when they used to be a shade over a fiver from Renault. Oh the joys.

I'm trying to do the right thing with it because it's had a million owners and not a lot of love, but let's see what happens when the next test is due. It should at least remain watertight and legal until then.
