Judgement day

  Clio 182
Evening all,

Coasting home tonight had a little spirited run for approx 30 seconds. Car develops a nasty rattle i think it’s the bottom end.

Oil changed last week belts done 4,000 miles ago. - i noticed when i started pulling it apart that ignition leads 1 & 4 were the wrong way round, could it of starved the cylinder, cause it to run lean and spin a bearing? (not a mechanic)

I don’t want to scap the car having speant almost £1,500 on it in the last year but if it is the bearings sounds like it’s goodnight :(

My mechanic mate is coming to have a look tomorrow or Saturday.

Thoughts, suggestions or prayers welcome.

Ign leads wont have caused it, they can be on different cylinders without issue due to the wasted spark setup. Bottom end probably just knackered due to wear and tear, whats the mileage ? I would double check crank pulley or nothing on the aux side has fallen to bits

Nothing lasts forever though if its terminal, just bang another engine in.

Any way to tell bar pulling it apart? It still turns over and runs too is it the bottom end?

As Brigsy said, leads being reversed would not be a problem, if it`s even possible due to the difference in the length of the leads.

No1 is the gearbox end by the way.

Used engines can still be had for the price of a decent set of tyres, so I would not condemn the car if indeed, the bottom end has failed.

Big end failure would be indicated if there is a rattle/knock on a light or trailing throttle, which stops under load.

Get a 2nd opinion.

I bought a Clio recently and driving it home noticed a nasty knocking sound. Worried to death I had the cambelt + dephaser changed but the sound persisted much to my dismay. Turned out to be the Carbon Cannister!

Carbon canister is more ticking not a heavy knock. Pull the plug on it temporarily to shut it up if needs be, will throw the eml on

How can you tell if it’s the cannister/how did you fix it?

Disconnect the vacuum hose from the back of the inlet manifold & cap it.

CC sounds more like a single ticking tappet than a rattle tbh, and the noise will disappear in the general cacophony over 2k revs.

This way will not throw the EML light.

Just in case anyone was interested - the soft cover for the aux pully had fould causing the belt to wear and partially snap - fixed in about 1.5 hours phew

Went up to Yorkshire this weekend about a 310 mile round trip, car was faultless tbh - just ticked out 100k and still returning 350miles + 50 left in tank and late 30’s mpg!
