Thats lack of knowledge though, which is no excuse to an insurance company.

I wouldn't bother myself, as IMO it's no different than getting one from kwikfit

i declared mine - and you might not be penalised for it. a lot of insurers use a % power increase factor - so, if the swap doesn't increase the power (which it doesn't), they're not bothered. in your opening gambit, just explain that the OE exhausts don't last and that you're fitting a stainless system.

Meh! Run the risk, there normally filthy anyway. and i doubt they'd notice on inspecition.

Then if it ever is in an accident and they ask why its louder, tell them the baffles are gone.

  Listerine & Poledo
anyway, seriously now boys
:)

So, if I go to RandomGarage and get a non-Renault exhaust from them, which is likely to be a cheaper option (if an issue), do I have to ring up my insurers and tell them I've had an exhaust fitted.

Surely "Pattern" parts are every bit as non-standard as some PECO Twin-big-bore-split 4's?

On the same basis, does this mean that when you stop using Continental rubber that you're equally as evil as someone "rollin" on chrome 20's?

Either way, I told my insurers about the body stripes on mine and it cost £50 to have them...I didn't even ask to have them put on! at least I know that if I bin it then they wont cop out of paying because of the dubious go-fasterness of some vinyl

Ive got a GDI (Piper) Stealth and when I told my insurers they asked me
"does it change the cosmetic appearance of the car" i.e. does it stick out
the back. No it sits in the same position as the original. To which they
answered "its not classed as a modification"

Just make sure you tell the its a s/s replacement not a performance exhaust.

Also anything classed as consumable isnt classed as a mod,
Tyres, air fliters, brake pads, discs, zorsts, etc
because alot of people buy cheaper parts from places like halfords, kwick fit etc

I haven't told them but I didn't know which particular exhaust it was until recently until Jamesstone confirmed it was a KTEC Stealth mk2.

I know it would have put my insurance up by £40 with elephant. New insurance with adrain flux that I'm soon to take out said no problems to it and nothing extra unless its a power mod.

How you finding it mate?

If the insurance want to be c***s, they will be. The ktec has increased bore, therefore could be considered performance enhancing. A pattern part won't, hence the difference.
I've been told that insurance inspectors fee's are related to the claim they can save the insurers. If you end up in a ditch, the claim probably won't be big enough for them to bother with. But if you wrap it around a Ferrari, I think they'd be inclined to have a look, especially given that anyone could spot a ktec stealth as nonstandard.

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!
a mate of mine had an arguement with adrian flux about the mondeo v6 brakes he fitted on his zetec-s.

they wanted to know what bhp gain the brakes would give.
so he began to argue that his insurance should come down as the car was now technically safer due to its better braking ability.

the phone operator wasnt having any of it!

Depends on the company i guess. My 4 pots have made no difference to my insurance.

To what extent though? What if you changed your original tyres for some slightly wider/lower profile ones come replacement time..

If you changed sizes then it probably would be classed as a cosmetic
mod, I'm talking about brand of tyres intead of size, unless
wider tyres were an option when the car was new,
even factory options need to be declared, they just wont replace
them if the car gets written off.

I had a golf with leather and they said if I had a replacement it wouldn't have it.

Don't forget that some companies were charging for cup packs, which is a factory option!

I'd like to declare:-

A Fullrun rear tyre (came with vehicle)
Unipart Spark plugs
Non-renault fixing bolts in front inner wheel lining
Non-Elf oil or petrol
Body-stripe vinyl graphics (came with vehicle)
Aftermarket dust in the interior
mud-effect mud graphics across entire lower vehicle

Good point about tyres - when I had the Williams I was running semi's for a while and never thought to tell the insurance co', didn't think I need to.

Think I will tell my insurers - not worth the risk for the sake of £30 more and technically it does give car bit more bhp. Am loving the exhaust - best £300 I have spent on car !

Out of interest word it as a stainless steel replacement exhaust and see what they say?

As long as you have it in writing either way your fine
