....even for renault. Picked up my 182 tonight and got home and realise I had insure the car on the wrong number plate. Rang privelige and changed to correct plate, only to discover they had replated the car with the WRONG registration!!!

Was too late to go back when realised and had to pay a £10 admin fee for my 4th change to the policy in a week lol.

Surely only the Renault and Arnold Clark combinaiton could have managed this. Had to laugh though.

Must admit, this nearly happened to me when picked up my 182 in July - wasn't from Arnold Clark though.

The Dealer had about a half dozen pre-reg 182, of which I bought one. When I went and signed up and handed over the deposit, I picked the (last remaining) black one, as they had at that time the one black one and three blue ones left.

Paid deposit, signed form, no problem. Dealer calls me and lets me know the reg number next day, so I phone Insurance and set all up.

Sharp-eyed Salesman calls me himself later that day and says the "admin girl" has given me the plate number for one of the blue ones, not (my!) black one. One-letter difference, easy mistake I guess?

anyway, rang insurers, they changed it FOC (as TBH the policy handn't event started yet) when I explained it was a dealer problem. The guy at Direct Line even told m he'd known this happen before, as often with pre-reg vehicles, the dealers have a whole buunch of cars delivered at the same time, with very similar plates, so mistakes can be made.

Kind of shudder though to think what might have happened if the mistake had been the other way, and someone got the "right" plate but "wrong" car - how would have that looked if the vehicle didn't match the V5 document (chassis number etc?)

Dont think theyd have charged me noramlly but it has kinda taken the mick with 4 set docs.
1. To extend cover on my LCR due to late del.
2. Intial set of docs with MJ54***
3 2nd set with MY54*** current plate
4. Another set to return to MJ54***

Phoned the dealership today and theyre getting another set of plates ready.

Happened to me at Arnold Clark, Warrington last year. I noticed plate on car was different to number given over the phone, confirmed it was the correct number with salesman and called my insurance company to change it. When I finally got the documents found the number on the car was wrong and the original number given was correct, called my insurance again, no problem. Then had to wait for them to make up a new set of plates.

Might be wrong, but I think I recommended Dutton James to you?? A while back on the forum. Used them for ages with 172.

Had a bad expierence with them and that kinda put me off them.

Ive never chosen the number plate for my new cars, but I remeber my parents choosing once of ours a while back when we got a motor. Assumed the DVLA just assigned them to cars these days.

LOL, my Uncle bought his new car a couple of years ago from a mercedes dealership (his is an e-class). He found out a few weeks ago though that they put the wrong numberplate on the car and that he has been driving about for 2 years with the wrong numberplate.

He only figured it out because he went back to find out about trading in his current car for a new one and when he told them the number plate they said that it actually belonged to a fiesta. A letter F on his number plate should have been an E it turned out (this was quickly fixed with some black tape). He had just been telling us a couple of days before about how he had been flashed by a few speed cameras and was surprised nothing came through the post, lol.

Private plates are best, then you get exactly what you want on the car and can sort ALL your insurance etc out way in advanced! The last 5 new cars i've had have all been registered with my own marks :)
