Light Bonnet

I believe that some earlier 172s had an alloy/aluminium bonnet instead of the steel bonnet on the later cars. Does anybody know about this, as it would be a good way to reduce weight (7-8Kg) as the current bonnet weighs a ton.

Suppposedly you cant get them any more as theyve been discontinued..it was in another thread. Anyway on the road i dont see the point really, unless you want a carbon one which is obviously very cool and you can tell your mates down the pub. But if youre on track why dont you just take the bonnet off altogether?

I heard (how true I dont know) is that the reason the discontinued the aluminium bonnet was to do with crash tests and safety. The bonnet plays a big part in a front impact. I guess they just wanted the 4/5 stars the clio got in the new crash tests.

Light weight bonnet

he he I remember the thread where a jap car was reduced to chassis and bare minimum. No bonnet ... not sure about aerodynamics... would look like a right to**er driving in town like that. More seriously, the crash test argument makes sense. Id still like to get my hands on one though. Were they for the 172 mk2? Re the carbon one, theyre £600 and I would definitely have them painted. so thats another £100+. Not much value.

The mk2 has a fold in the middle, the mk1 doesnt, and you can only get it from a mk1 172, and i think it was only up to a certain build date they had them.
